I am working on this tractor and was wondering if there is a fix for the oil that leaks around clutch pulley. Took pulley off thinking that oil slinger grooves were pluged but they are clean. Any fixes? Thanks in advance.

Just fixed this pretty well on my 1948 A. There is no oil seal on the clutch side of the crank. What you need to do is remove the clutch assembly, right brake assembly and reduction gear cover. Loosen the main bearing bolts and push the shims tight against the journal. (Page 17 of the I&T manual)Tighten up the main bearing bolts being sure the shims stay pushed against the journal. This corrected 95% of my oil leaks around the pully.

PS: My e-mail is [email protected] I am not listing e-mail above cause too many viruses are attaching to e-mails these days. Mine are clean as Norton screens them before they are sent.

Rich, I would like to know the same thing and asked it earlier here on our 48A. I haven't had responses but I have an idea that it must have something to do with that outer bearing needing greased every year like the owners manual says to do. Maybe the grease helps keep the oil from coming on through? I wish Clooney or one of the others who have been there would chime in here.

Old John Deere tractors are like old "Harley-Davison's", they just leak oil. Some causes are excessive crankcase pressure "blowby" caused by worn cylinders and rings, diluted motor oil, too light a motor oil. oil level over full. Fanshaft ventilator pump not working, pipes ventilator inlet and or outlet pluged, fitting in valve cover restricted, bracket for air cleaner body & stack pluged. Also if the ventilator pipes are not restricted the system may be drawing in air thru the fittings or p.n. B60R seals instead of pulling in vapors as designed. Just a few things to check.
