1.) It has been suggested (not on YT) that I put vinegar in the crankcase to loosen the pistons. Do you know if this works?

2.) The manual says that (in an engine that isn't stuck), the way to remove the pistons is out the front of the block with the block in place. Can (or why can't) the block (in an engine that isn't stuck) be pulled forward leaving the pistons connected to the crankshaft?

You may not be able to remove the rod bolt nuts without being able to turn the crank, depending on the position of the crank. If you can remove the connecting rod nuts, then yes you can remove block with the stuck pistons in place. The connecting rod clearance on a 50 is pretty tight to the cam if number one rod is at the high point of its travel. I would try it if you can get the connecting rod caps off.

Quit calling yourself an idiot, it is no longer cute. And your questions are not stupid. That is unless the rest of us are asking stupid questions.

1-it is good on a salad ! 2-they can,but try putting two in at the same time to assemble. P.S. I seen a power block and pistons for a 50 advertised on this site, you may want to check into them.

I take it the answer to question #1 is either it doesn't work or you don't know?

Vinegar may work - if you want to buy 30 gallons of it to fill the crankcase completely - because that's what it will take to get it on the back side of the pistons. And yes, in an unstuck engine you could pull the block and leave the pistons and rods - but why would you? You would not be able to reassemble in the same manner - at least not without considerable effort and probably some broken rings. You can usually assume that the methods described in service manuals are the correct and easiest ways to go about repairs. Not always, but usually.
