Went with a nephew of mine to look at a 720 gas. This is a great looking tractor, new paint like new tires PS, rebuilt starter/ gen, starts and runs great until you start to move around.

Terrible noise in transmission and jumped out of 3rd gear. The best I can tell its in the reduction gears but we are in no position to inspect.

Question is, Whats the worst case senario you guys have seen in rebuilding trannys. Neither one of us is afraid to get into it and we may be lucky and only need bearings. The price is right but we would appreciate any feedback you may have

I just finished going thru a JD 720 transmission. The problem was it would lock in 4 & 6 gear. The problem was a small broken casting that JD had in the warehouse. I would recommend that you go thru it as I found bad bearings and a gear tooth partially broken off the 2-5 driven gear, and a bad mainshaft. While working on the transmission pull the power trol and replace the axle seals.

It is really not that bad of a job rebuilding the trans, bearings are high though ($600.00+ for a complete set of bearigs for a 60, JD was the only place that had them). Gears usually are attainalbe, shifter parts can be found too. Make sure you draw a diagram and list the gears as you take them out. It is A LOT of work to go thru one, put it back together, then find out you put one in WRONG (Yes it is from personal experience). And get a good shop manual, it will help tremendously. As far as the noise goes, have seen some tractors that have had the reduction gears changed out and the 'old' and 'new' gears don't like each other and will make a lot of noise (have heard some be real howlers!), but it is usually not harmful. Jumping out of gear could be a worn shifter shaft or a worn shifter, both fixable with patience. My two bits. HB
