I read Broken Wrench's reply last month about a 239T, and a 276T diesel engine swap for a late 3020 (123,219). Mine has a bad block, and I am trying to learn all I can about an upgrade. I love my 3020! I think it's the only one around these parts with a Rollamatic, and it's staying that way! My wife bought a book from the "books a Million" store for me. It is titled-"John Deere new generation tractors" written by Chester Peterson,Jr. & Rod Beemer. On page 87 there is a picture of a 3020 that has a "Dubuque Industial" engine in it. It goes on to say that an adapter plate was "made" for it. In Broken Wrench's reply about gas to diesel last month, he says to use a adapter plate from a 4030 to fit the 239T or 276T in my late 3020. That is where I'm lost and need more information. The adapter plate information, and what did these two engines (239T,276T) come from JD in? I want to thank Broken Wrench for giving my 3020 new hope! I also want to thank anyone in advance for any information they may share with me on this resurrection of a piece of an all American Classic! Have a good day; Barney in South Ga.

Barney,Broken Wrench moved to Brasil last month, and is a little slow getting set up on line.
Four years ago we put a 4239T in a 2520 gasser,we used the base plate off of a 4030 and the oil pan off a 2510.The engine we used was out of a 490 backhoe. If you use an industrial you will also need a tach drive and a few other minor modifications.Good Luck.John

John, thanks for the information. We have a 410 JD backhoe, is that the same model you mentioned? I've never heard of a 490 Backhoe, it must be new. I'm sure Broken Wrench will be missed here.

Thanks Again; Barney

Barney,The 490 backhoe was a small version of the 590 and 690 hoes,it was a track machine,not like a 410 on rubber,but a true backhoe,not a loader with a hoe on the back.John

Barney, the 239 and 276 engines are "300" series engines by John Deere. All of these engines, whether they are 3,4 or 6 cylinder have a rear housing on them that bolts on the engine block and houses the rear crankshaft seal. If you find this housing from a 4030 you will be able to adapt the Dubuque 300 engine to your Waterloo chassis. I would think a housing from a 2510-2520 would work, too, as they had a 300 series engine in them as well. The very latest 4050 tractors also had a 359 engine which is a 300 series. Hope this helps. Mike
