Has anybody had any experience using a 5020 for row crop work? - i.e. planting, spraying, cultivating? How do they perform? They seem like they could be a little bulky and cumbersome for this work, but I know Deere promoted them for this kind of work when they were new. They seem to be a really heavy-duty, strong tractor & also are a whole lot cheaper when comparing to something like a 4020. Any thoughts?

You dont specify which row width you are working or tire size but I know from thousands of hours logged on 6030s (with 18.4x38 duals and 11.00 x 16 fronts) doing rowcrop work that you should be fine with the 5020. We used 12-row equipment (30 rows) to plant and cultivate soybeans and grain sorghum for many years and although I did most of the cultivating with a 4440 (also with 18.4x38 duals and 11.00 x 16 fronts) and a Taylor Way 3-sweep (12-row) and a Lilliston rolling cultivator (12-row), I occasionally had to hitch the cultivators to the 6030 and it did beautifully although I preferred the 4440. We planted and cultivated with duals on the tractors for extra stability. Good luck.

I re-hipped about a thousand acres and bedded up 4 or 5 hundred with a 6030 one year. Pulled 6-row bedders on the 3 point. I loved the way the tractor handled. Easy to turn around. The only thing that got old was clutching. Had a killer clutch!

You hit the nail on the head about that 6030 clutch Mitch. We have 2 6030s and they both require a pretty good left leg.

The later 5020's were available as a row crop but they were still rather cumbersome and heavy.

I thought I had seen one in a row crop form. HIgher clearance front axle and flat top fenders.

MAybe a good compromise for you would be a 4520 or 4620. They are between the 4020 and 5020 in size and weight and are usually priced reasonable. Kind of the best of both worlds.

I know someone with a 5020. It's a rugged horse of a tractor, but that 531 engine is LOUD and thirsty. It also has only a 1000 rpm PTO. Also seems as though many 5020s do not have 3-point hitches.
