I recently purchased a JD A wide front from a relative. It a new styled supposed to be a 1947 or 48.

It has a factory wide front ... with a curved cast iron front end that was described to me as the "ant eater" front end.

I have looked for pictures of this type of JD A and all other front ends I have seen look like what has been described as a "split pedestal".

How many "ant eaters" were made? Is there anything unique regarding serial numbers, etc.?

I need to work on front end to take some slack out of it so that front wheels don't wobble. Is there anything unique about parts or repairs for this kind of wide front that I need to be aware of?

Thanks for any information ... or sources where I can obtain information.

JD70Jim ...

I don't have a serial number yet ... I will look for one this weekend.

The AW "ant eater" is definitely later, styled version with enclosed flywheel, electric start, bench seat with enclosed battery under seat. I believe it has pressed steel rail frame.

Hope this helps ... will look for serial number.

Forget the front end for a minute, instead, tell me if the FRAME is pressed steel or cast Iron, Does it have the "dishpan seat" or is it equipped with a battery box seat? Is the flywheel enclosed or not, and by any chance was there a SERIAL NUMBER??
