Working on a 720 that you just can not seem to slip the clutch in, it just grabs at once. I have tightend it up evenly so that one side is not tighter than the rest. Any suggestions.

Allen, there are some good points below.
~Also make sure the clutch is assembled correctly, if the double sided disks are not on the drive pins the clutch will grab & not want to release easily.
~If there is very much slop in the sleeve drive pin to pin hole in the sleeve it will also grab....

In addition to checking for broken or oil soaked disks when apart I like to take all the metal plates and the drive disk that are out and sandblast the faces to deglaze them. If this doesn't get it out you may need to go farther into the pulley and change bushing and grease toggle dogs and clean up everything.

Many times, the clutch on numbers models JDs grab because the large brass bushing on the inner end of the clutch that rides on the crankshaft is worn. With the clutch disengaged and the engine off, lift on the outer end of the pulley. If the is up & down play on the clutch the bushing needs to be replaced. Even if the clutch is adjusted evenly, the pulley trips down and grabs as soon as you start to engage it. Many old-time Deere guys, including my dad, were fanatics about not letting the tractor idle with the clutch disgengaged and the tractor in gear, because this wore the bushing faster. We had to take the tractor out of gear and "run" the pulley or face the wrath of dad. Hope this helps.

Definitely know about the wrath of Dad and not engaging the clutch in Neutral!!! A second opinion is that the clutch disk behind the drive disk could be bad. I have a 730 and when it gets 'jumpy' I can usually take the clutch apart and the innermost disk behind the drive disk is broken. I replace it, stick it back together and she is fine. I started using a torque wrench to set the clutch and the broken disk problem has pretty much went away.
