I have 1958 JD 420T. The shop manual calls for 10W oil in the touch-o-matic for the three point and power steering. Being that it's almost impossible to find 10W oil in town, does anyone know of an acceptable substitute that I can use? Any help is appreciated.

We have used 10W in our 40T since I can't remember when. We have a 1020 that uses Hytran for it and that is what we use in the 40T touch-o-matic. Has worked fine. Of course I doubt it gets much chance to hurt anything given the amount laying on the barn floor. Gotta do something about this one of these days.

Jason

This ought to cause a comomtion. I grab what is on the shelf and add to my 58 touch o matic, since I have to replace what is on the barn floor and drizzled around my property quite often. 10W30 or 10W40 is usually on the shelf. I havn't noticed any difference in performance since the day I got it going. Matter of fact I put 10 hours on the hour meter this week end using the front loader and box blade. As I recall, my op manual says to put auto trans fluid in the power steering - this is the type of power steering like on a car with the separate pump.

Jason, yes that is what Deere used in the Dubuque tractors. The 10W they mention is a Non- Detergent. Actually about the cheapest thing you can buy. You must have a Wal-Mart near you. They have the 10W non-det. for about $1 a quart. Also lots of country town auto parts stores stock it, as it is used in some logging equipment also.
