Governor Weights Shredding

Took the governor off of my 1944 A. Weights are out of place and grinding against inside of the governor case, shaving metal off of the weights. Three questions: 1) Do I have to take the shaft apart to remove the weights? 2) It appears that these small metal shavings had to have gone down into the gears below. How much trouble is that going to be? 3) What can I do to fix this? Thank you for any advise.

JKC, Another possible cause for the problem you have can be caused by operating the engine w/o having the throttle rod hooked up between the gov. and the carb. The weights will be unrestrained and fly outward striking the inside of the case.

What about the metal shavings that may have dropped into the crankcase?

JKC, I'm sure your engine is not the first w/ lead shavings and some may tell you it won't hurt anything but if it was mine i wash it all out and probably pull the oil pump also to thoroughly clean crankcase

JKC I inadvertenly position the weight on my "G" and boy was it wild. To correct this take cover off and reach inside and remove two screws from gov. throtle shaft(these little screws are a pain most of the time they are dropped and you have to fish them out of crankcase)after you have screws in hand pull gov assembly out, notice the little arms projecting out of weights what position they are in,pull pens in weights check for damage and loose pins, the hole in weights will wholar out and you should replace weights and pens. When you go to reinstall weights be sure the weight arm is on side of slide assembly next to fanshaft gear.It looks like the arms go in the slot on slide assembly (but they don't) been there done that. When you go back with assembly align timing marks then loosen distr.or mag. which ever you have and instll gov assembly then set mag or distr.in correct position. Gman
