What rears tires fit a JD 80?

I just purchased a JD 80 to restore. It has 18.4 x 26 rear tires. They are industrial tires so I know they are not what came on the tractor. Seems like 15.4 x 34 was the standard tire and (something) x 26 was the optional tire. We plan on pulling the tractor. I know some pulls only allow 18.4 max but some through in the exception of "if it came from the factory you can run it". Was the optional tire a 23.1 x 26? Who has found 26" tires out there that pulls good? Anyone ran into a 12 or 13 x 36 23degree tire that pulls good? I also have a B in need of tires. Most of Miller's sizes are in 45 degree which will be a last resort.

Thanks for your help,
John

John-----

According to J.R. Hobbs, rear tire options for the 80 were as follows: 14x34 (new sizes 16.9x34) was standard. 15.35x34 (18.4x34) and 18x26 (23.1x26) were optional and could be ordered in rice and cane treads, if desired. Front tires were 7.50x18 in either 4 ply or, optional, 6 ply.

While there were no 80 Industrials, per se, a great many were rigged for industrial or construction use. It would not surprise me if those tires could have come from John Deere.

Maybe someone else can help you with what constitutes an ideal, legal pulling tire thats available today.

Putt Putt covered the tire subject pretty well. Your tire size should most likely be 23.1x26, because the 34 inch wide tires need a new rim and hub.

And Putt Putt was right about the grader tread. They could be factory, but I think most likely not, since it is a "modern" size, and the fact that they are too small. I haven't found any pictures of an 80 with grader tread, but I do have some of a 70 with these from the factory. The current owner uses it for pulling. He said that it is great on dry tracks. You could try it.

My 80 also has 18.4x26 rears. I'm gonna keep them! They're in good shape, and 10 ply! Although the tractor is always going uphill since the rears are actually too small. Kinda funny looking.

Good luck with your 80. I'm trying to fix mine too!
