I have a 1948 A, and in the process of acquiring my Grandfathers 1943 A. My question is, are these tractors originally 6V or 12V? My '48 has a 12V battery but still has the original generator with coil type dist. The '43 has original generator with Wico mag. I have a neighbor with a '47 A and he has two 6V batteries wired in parrellel. He says this is the way they were originally. How should I restore each of these tractors ignition systems to be factory original?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Mike, From the factory the '43 A came w/a 6v system and a WICO model C magneto. The '47 A came with a 12v system of 2 batterys wired parallel and a WICO model C magneto, the '48 A has the same elecrical system and if under sn 598518 came w/the same WICO model C, if later it would have had a WICO model X.

So my '48 should have 2 12V batteries wired in parrellel, and someone in the past has changed the distributor from a mag to a regular coil type?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, I was wrong your tractor came w/2-6v batterys in series, most people just use 1 12v . Sorry for the mix up. George

Is that true for the '43 and the '48?

Mike, John Deere A's before s.n.584000 w/ factory electrical systems used only 1 6v. battery installed under covers between the main hood and dash(long hood slant dash). After s.n.584000(in the 1947 model year) the system was changed to 12v(2-6v batterys wired in series)and placed in a box under the seat. So the '43 had a 6v battery, the '47 need s.n. (if starter on top before tractoris before 584000, if starter enclosed under bottom it is after 584000) and the '48 came w/2 6v batterys of which most have since been changed to a single 12v.
