Yesterday I looked at a '58 420W. Has power steering, dual control three point hitch, live PTO, 5 speed. Ran decent, but needed valves adjusted. There was oil all over the rear around the three point lift and also all over the engine under the power steering pump. Also had a click type noise in the transmission, not related to driving gears, so I assumed it had to do with the PTO. Good tires and nothing was cracked and welded. Sheet metal was good, but needs paint. I offered $2500 as the noise in the transmission bothered me and also the oil leaks looked like they could be a pain to fix. Are parts available for the power steering? The owner was asking $3500 which is what it would be worth in good condition. The owner said he would think about it. I have a 420U with a loader and I would move the loader onto this tractor if I did buy it. Main reason I am interested is the larger tires, power steering and 5 speed. What is it really worth?

I think your offer was very reasonable. If all that stuff is a breeze to fix the owner would wave his magic wand over the tractor and keep it. That needing valves adjusted sounds good, but things usually don't get fixed that easily. Sometimes it takes will power to walk. I just bought a lawnmower that the owner thought was a jewel, but no one was around fighting for it. I offered him 1000 less than his give away price and left my phone number. He called a week later and toook the offer. Basically it is whatever it is worth to you, but I wouldn't touch that tractor with a ten foot pole when there are good ones out there for around 4500. Just my thoughts after spending countless hours working on my 420. I don't regret it and I will never get rid of the tractor but my starting point was 1800. My little valve adjustment deal turned out to be that the only good thing about the head was that it was not cracked. Everything was junk. Anyway, rambled enough - Have fun outh there!

I think your $$ numbers are just about right.

To get the 3 pt so it doesn't leak takes a lot of time.

Transmission sounds like a tooth is gone from the intermediate cluster. $250 part + split the tractor.

If you gain live PTO with the 420W it would be handy if you mow.

I also have a 420 U that is leaking around the 3 pt. How hard is it to fix? Mine seems to be leaking form the valve area which is in front of the casting that the lift arms are located. its the section where you pour the fluid into that is bolted to the top of the differential. after looking at the bottom of this part it dosen't seem to have a gasket in there (it probably does, I just can't see it). can this part be removed very easly and reinstalled with silicone sealant? Thanks for your help...Lee
