Do you have a Perma-Clutch? My dad had a Perma-Clutch in his 4620 and had a similar problem. What happened on his tracor was that the clutch discs magnitized them selves and the clutch wouldn't disengage. It some times got so bad that he broke shifting levers trying to shift it, he went through at least three shifting levers. The only way he could get the clutch to work was to put the tractor in road gear step on the brakes and slip the clutch usually for a good 30 seconds and then it would work for a while and then it would act up again. My uncle also had this problem with his 4020 and took it to the john deere dealer and to fix it they had to put in another clutch which solved the problem.

The engine disk is stuck /rusted to the splines. you cant get to it short of splitting the tractor. By the way getting the tractor to move by pushing the shift lever is going to be costly someday as you are burning the syncronisers.you can put oil down thru the timeing hole but it wont get where it needs to be. Kind of like what everyone else had said, grease will help. On the left side of the tractor case almost directly above the foot step is a grease zirk. On the back side of the zirk is a tube which channels the grease to the shaft that the throw out bearing and clutch assembly works. Also take off the access plate located on the belly of the tractor directly under the clutch. You can squirt a little oil on the clutch fingers where they pivot. This will help, good luck, James in Texas

Had a similar problem with a 2440 and a 2840. Cant say as a 4020 has the same features but its a simple fix for you possibly. If you can see the tranny shaft that the throwout bearing rides on, give it a shot of wd-40 type stuff. Dont overdo it because you dont want it around your clutch disc. Grease your throw out bearing also if its possible. Holler back with the results good or bad.

Rich,

I've had a 1020 for over 20 years. Not up to your size standards.. but maybe similar.

There's a round plug type panel on my JD's left side that's removed to lubricate the clutch throw out bearing thru a grease fitting. X-ray vision and a rubber hose grease gun are needed to do this job. I've never messed with that on any auto I've worked on, but then, they didn't have two stage clutches.. and I sure didn't own them for 20 years.

I don't think it would hurt anything to squirt some grease in there to make sure the throw out bearing is moving freely. From what you say, this could well be the problem. In any event, the fix I'm suggesting won't hurt anything.

Good luck with it....

Steve

I had a 4620 with a perma clutch that would do that you could never shift at more than an idle they were kinda graby but you could not wear them out very easy it had the long shift lever and we still broke 2 of them they have alot of metalic fibers in them and I was told that they magnetise and stick to the flywheel we use to slip it in road gear then it would seem to be a little better for a while we had to adjust so there was no free travel at all but greased throwout bearing about every 3 days used it for 4 years about 3500 hours and the throwout bearing never gave any proublems is yours a perma clutch some worked good but most didn't

cut off earlier, particularily in more humid weather. I can't get it to release after starting the engine, to put it in gear. I have to press it into 1st gear with my foot for enough force, then throttle jump it to engage, throttle shift to syncro into 3rd, and clutch hop it enough until the clutch disengages to have any action correctly. I'll usually slip the clutch a little a few times and it'll work fine the rest of the day, but leave it set for a few days and I have to go through the process again? In less humid weather and winter it may be a few weeks between sessions. Its a '67 unit in good shape. Does anyone know of a simple fix short of splitting the unit to get at the clutch disc and pressure plate. Can anything be done by oil misting to prevent corrosion and not effecting clutch torque capability? By passing neutral start and starting in gear to force release isn't a solution either, although that would work in a similar situation with an older two cylinder. Any help? Thanks.

Try placing a block to hold the clutch pedal down
when parked this way disk won't stick to fylwheel. Also when doing this I'm not sure tractor will stay put you may want to block wheels for saftey. You might be able to spray something into clutch
by going through timing mark cover hole. Try some stoddard solvent , brake clean, or something?
