Is there a excellent dealer that supports the older tractors. I am set up on John Deere parts ordering and I am impressed by how many parts are still available. I contacted my local dealer by phone and they will order parts but I do not see them going the extra mile. Is it common for dealers to charge full list price? I would perfer to use a dealer that is experienced in older tractors and knows how to get the hard parts.

The parts have to ship so a non-local dealer is no problem. (Austin, TX)
I have a 1948 model M.

We are a John Deere dealer from Saskatchewan Canada we specialize in a large selection of antique tractor parts, we carry a huge inventory of obsolete inventory. All of this stuff is in Canadian funds. ALso our inventory can be checked on a dealer locator, plus I will give a 10% discount. If interested call 306-424-2212 ask for Ryan

George, which way ore you from Austin, if east, the dealer in Bryan is real helpful to us older tractor guys, even gives a discount to those of us in the tractor club. By the way, we are having our club show tomorrow in Snook (yes that's the name of the town) come see us, we will usually have 25 or 30 old tractors, 95% of is is green but we will let the others in. E-mail me tonight for more info.

I have been ordering my parts from the local dealer and found that if I let him order it so it arrives 2 weeks from now, it gets much cheaper and no shipping charges on top of the price. I have done enough parts with them that I get the frequent shopper treatment. I don't get much time to work on the tractors so I can plan plenty ahead on parts most of the time. It works nice for both me and them plus keeps John Deere interested in keeping those parts available.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll try them.

Gary, When I refer to list I am talking about the parts on the John Deere ordering web site. I am ordering gaskets and a oil cup. The oil cup list for $52 I wonder if dealers give a small typical discount off list. I am new at buying tractor parts and I figure this is the place to ask questions.

Goerge,
I understand more clearly what you are asking now, you actually were using a list from some source. In general, for the older tractor parts, the rule of thumb seems to be to charge whatever the traffic will bear. On one occassion, I found I could buy a NOS item from a dealer cheaper than I could buy it used from a salvage yard. I agree with the previous post that the prices range from "espensive" to "more expensive", but what the heck look at all the fun we're having! You are right, this is the place to ask.

George, I know prices vary between the dealers. How much I don't know. There are 5 dealers within a 50 mile radius from here. I have gotten different prices on the same part. One told me a part was no longer available, the other said when do you want it.

Just for reference, an electric childrens gator ranged from $299 - $350.

My Uncle priced the real Gator at the dealer he was service manager at for 20+ years. They told him $5500 was best they could do. We went to one in another town. They didn't know him from Adam. Price for the same was $5300.

There are two kinds of prices for the green - expensive and more expensive. I have found though that most dealers don't arbitrarily set the price.

To George and others,
I can not fathom how you can even refer to "list price" for parts on a tractor that is over 50 years old! What is the "list price" for a compressor for a 1948 model Frigidaire refrigerator? Collectors should be thankful that someone...anyone even has these parts, whether they are NOS or used. My local dealer, Pikeville Equipment, has many NOS parts for the old two cylinders, but they are not sold at "list price". The "list price" for a clutch pad in 1950 for a John Deere "B" would be about $1.50. Today there is no "list price", but you can buy one for about $15. If someone can furnish me with a "list price" for these tractor parts, please do. From my point of view, these parts are hard to find, a pain in the neck for most dealers to stock, and we are lucky enough to get them at any price. I have seen items I need vary in price from $5 to $75 used, and the same item new $100. Believe me, I would like to get these parts for less, but this is not the bread and butter of most dealerships. Most only carry the parts because someone in the dealership is interested in the hobby himself. Just my two cents, maybe I missed the point.

George, If you don't mind the shipping, call Bob Washburn at 5 Star John Deere in Kirkwood, NY (Upstate near Binghamton) (607)775-2006. They are an Industrial dealer first and foremost, but Bob really helps us 2 banger collectors. He was a mechanic, and is a collector, they have availability of ALL parts still available from Deere, and can usually point you somewhere for the parts Deere doesn't support. He does give a little discount to local collectors, but you can't expect a huge discount; the antique parts are NOT where any existing dealer makes their profit anymore, so if someone like Bob doesn't justify his time spent catering to us, the powers that be will surely shut that down, like many dealers have. ONLT TALK TO BOB when you call, he has all the manuals, but often doesn't even need to refer to them, but NO ONE else at that dealership knows an MT from a D, and they don't care. Sometimes it is a challenge to get him because he is just as proficient at industrial parts, and everyone asks for him, but it IS woth the wait. Pete

Most dealers I've seen charge over list price
for parts, especially the little stuff.List price
is just a made up figure that doesn't mean anything,it's just a guide line they don't have
to follow.

George, If you are talking about wanting to use a dealer in any state--I can recomend mine, he is very familiar with the Dubuque tractors. He knows what the parts look like without looking at the picture. Tell him Wayne told you. It is Oakland Ag. in Alabama. Ask for Dale. The number is 1-256-764-1612
