I am new to this so I hope you bear with me as I am learning. I have posted this in 2 other spots on this site and I think I have finally found the best spot so I will ask it again.

I am looking at buying a JD model 70 and the current owner says that one of the plugs fouls. What are the possible causes? Bad ignition?, Bad valves?, bad rings, cracked block? The cracked block has me the most concerned. Is there anyway to identify these problems without taring down the engine? How about the cost of the repairs if needed or is it something I could tackle myself. In a past life I was an auto mechanic (before computers).

I assume it will run. Clean both plugs, start the engine and let it warm up. Rev it to medium idle and see if it will run on only one side and then the other. When running on the fouling plug it will probably smoke. Black smoke suggest rich mixture and both plugs should foul. White smoke might come from fouled side only, indicating a gasket leakage or cracked water jacket. Gray smoke may come from fouled side only and suggest oil getting into combustion chamber: bad rings/cylinder wall or worn valve guides. Some of these old tractors suffered cylinder wall corrosion damage when allowed to set idle for long periods with one or both spark plugs out. Water would lie in the bottom of the cylinder. Plug fouling is a common problem when a cylinder's pumping oil. Look for a black, grimy, oily deposit on the plug.

Mick, You have to first diagnose the problem just like on the computer or a auto engine. Tell tale sign ,whats the plug look like? Oil fouled, fuel fouled, antifreeze fouled, Is it getting away with coolant?Does it only miss when you first start it? Are the ignition wires good? Does it foul one or both plugs. Switch wires if only one. Replace the wire with wire cond.Go to the hottest heat range plug for the application.Does the carb flood over? Is the air cleaner clean top and bottom. Remove the air inlet pipe to see if affects the richness of the carb.Check the coil. Check points, cond, cap, rotor Check comp, I am sure I missed a few things our tractor buddies will fill in. Good Luck, Let us know what you find. We learn from each others problems. Earl Seamands Mahomet Illinois

I would suggest checking the compression on both cylinders and see if there is a difference in the two.It could be several things but I had a G with one rocker arm out of adjustment causing one of my plugs to foul.Hope this helps.By the way,use Autolite 388's or AC plugs.Later,Jack.
