I'm down to looking for a matching pair of original front rims for my 70D narrow-front Row Crop.

Many years ago, one rim cracked around the bolt holes and failed. It was replaced by what JD sold at the time as a replacement rim. The remaining original rim has many cracks, too. The replacement rim I have is in great shape, but the dish is just backwards from the original rim. I would match the replacement rim, but I think that rim was correct for maybe late 720/730, and not the 70.

The current front tires are 6.50-16 (though I think 6.00-16 was as equipped in 1955, could someone confirm this ?), so I THINK the rims are called 6 x 16. I haven't found a part number on it yet, but according to the book it is either JD 1274 or JD 1290.

I've attached a picture of the wheel I wish copy.

Thanks for any information/parts leads!

Frank, the rim pictured is either a JD1268R or a JD1274R. They are very similar with the 1274 rim being slightly heavier. The 1268 rim was designated when 4-ply tires were originally used and the 1274 when 6-ply was chosen. If your rim is in good shape the part number will be stamped in the extreme outside part of the center disk near the rim. The JD1290 rim was used on late 720's and 730's and was often used as a replacement rim on the older tractors. They look very much different. I should have either a 1268 or 1274 rim. Check with me in a couple of days and I will know for sure by then. Mike

The wheels on a 1953 JD 50-shaped piece of rust and a 1975? David Brown Case 885 look the same. The 50-shaped piece of rust has 1 5.50-16 tri-rib tire and 1 6.50-16 car tire. The 885 has 2 tri-rib 6.50-16s.

Thanks Mike.

I checked more closely, and indeed the cracked rim is JD 1274. The other good rim is JD 1290. If I go with 1290, I need one. If I go with 1274, I need two. I better stay with the heaveiest I can get since I might put my 45W loader on it for some work.

I'm tempted to find a wide front for it. I believe round or square is correct for 1955.

Frank

Frank, A couple of years ago i cleaned up the best 2 of three 1290's i had, mounted new 600x16-6plys on put on the tractor and then realized the wheel center and valve stem hole were opposite on one of the reconditioned rims and the off set was different to boot. Buy a matched pair or take your good one along if buying at shows etc. I would use at least the 1290 style of rim as i believe you plan on reinstalling the #45 loader(w/at least 6ply. tires) also my 3 rims were marked JD1290. Geo:

You bring up a good point. The tractor has 6 plys on it now (they're good enough, but have a couple side wall cuts and should be replaced), and if I use a loader, I should really consider the heavier duty rims. I'm leaning towards 1290, then I'd only have to buy one.vvHeck, maybe the 1290 is still available from JD ?

Thanks !

Frank

Frank, Deere had them a few years ago ,and if they do make sure to tell them you will only take it if it matches. I think the last ones were different(maybe w/slots like some new generation stuff???). The 1290's have a different look than the 1268's but will be better w/the loader even if you only use it a little. How did you make out w/the fuel gauge? Pictures looking good so far. Geo.

Well, I re-glassed the gauge, and was able to re-wind the sender and solder the broken ends together, and so far, it's working fine (he said while crossing all fingers and toes...).

Hopefully I'll be able to find a good 1290 that I can look over before purchase. I can sure wait a while until I can maybe get to a show. I'm planning on hunting Poorerbut at the Springfield show in July, or maybe Portland in August for sure.

Frank,
You really need to come to the Springfield show. It will be a good show. I'll be there all day Fri. and Sat. On Saturday I'll be helping out with the tractor pull. If you're still looking for a 1290 rim at that time I have a good one that I could bring along for you. It came off a 70 gas that I sold about a year ago. I got a flat while planting oats so I just grabbed a wheel off of a parts A that I had and never changed it back to the correct wheel. Guess there's probably someone out there cursing me now because their 70 has mismatched wheels!

That's what I have on there now. I like the size and width, but wished you could get the 6.50 in the old ground grip style.

Have you called Miller Tire ? They seem to have
access to old molds . There's another outfit but
I can't remember the name right now.

Miller only shows the ground grip in 6.00x16. Not a heart breaker. It's got old Tractor Supply Huskee's on it that I put on in '71. With duals and big fronts she looked pretty mean !
