Can I use a timing light to set the timing on a late B with wico Mag and what are the reference points for doing so. Clooney if you read this I finally got it running well but it is now hard to start. Cranks a lot before firing, before it started easily but would surge under load and blow black smoke eventually quitting. Rebuilt mag, new points/condenser new plug wires and plugs autolite 386 (yellow jacket 10mm copper core). Thanks for everyones input this is a great board.

Frmuse, you can use a light but will have to make your own reference marks.
~It won't be any help on starting as it will only check the running timing not the starting [under 250 RPM] timing.
~Just set the mag so the mag snaps when flywheel [L/H impulse] on flywheel lines up with the case mark [at o'clock behind flywheel].
~You can try a little [maybe 1/4"] advanced then try about 1/4" retarded. You will probably have to pull the flywheel cover to do it right as that little notch on the flywheel to cover is hard to get exact.

I just went through this this past weekend. When I was done, it was a piece of cake. I studied the manual for a few days on my late B. Then I went to work. Nothing on the B looked like the manual. How the heck was I supposed to turn the fly wheel? I pulled off the fly wheel inspection cover, loosened up the mag, removed the spark plugs. I then found the mark on the fly wheel and the one on the cover. I found a box end wrench that fit a large bolt on the flywheel center and then used a large crecent on the boxend handle to to act as a handle to move the flywheel. Now I could go clock wise to 9 o clock (on a compression stroke) and slowly move the flywheel CC to 6 o clock to line up the marks. When you hear the impulse coupler snap, you know where you are for adjustment. Back up the flywheel and do it again until your adustment is right on the money. When I was done, the coupler would snap exactly when the marks lined up. It was the first time I did this. I was very proud of myself. Originally, my first thoughts were how I could do this with a timing light. The manuals were right. Fred
