2020 loader tractor (live-pto-independent pto? and Hours?)

Looking at a 2020 loader tractor with 2459hrs.
First question- is that a lot of hours?
Second question- I know what live pto is but what is independent pto and how does a 2stage clutch figure into it? I thought a 2 stage clutch was for live pto (halfway down disengaged the tranny, all the way down disengaged pto)

Thanks,

back40,

The hours are light and possible. The 2020 is probably over 30 years old. At most it's only worked 80 hours a year. In human terms, that's only two weeks a year.

I've got a '66 model 1020 with loader. She's just now approaching 2200 hours. For years, she's only worked hard 3 times a year -- mowing, raking, then baling hay on our 20 acres. The loader is great to fill the spreader with the gifts our four legged mowing critters leave.

The clutch is the same in my machine as a 2020. Like you describe, half way down to change gears, all the way down to enable or disable the pto's -- front and / or rear. The two pto's work independently, that may be the source of the term. And as you know, you can sit, the machine out of gear, and run somthing like an auger with the pto -- live pto as I understand the word. Whatever the terminology, that's how they work. I wouldn't get too concerned about what word somebody uses.

My guess is you're looking at a pretty good machine. Let me know if you decide against it, maybe my 1020 would like a brother.

best of luck,

Steve

I have always figured live and independent pto were the same thing, just depends upon who is selling it. I am not sure that JD ever used a 2 stage clutch for the live or independent pto. Most either had engine driven pto, where the pto stops when you push in the clutch, or live with a separate lever to engage or disengage as you want. engine clutch does not affect it's operation. Ford and Massyferguson used the 2 stage clutch but called it "live PTO" I prefer the JD system with separate lever. The 2020 was a good tractor, hours sound low for a tractor that old but then lots of these were used on a loader all the time and maybe didn't get that much use or at least prolonged use.

My understanding is live PTO works thru the 2 stage tractor clutch after it is engaged and independent PTO is solely controlled by a lever.

I think 2400 hrs is low for a 30+ yr old tractor but tach cable could be or have beed broken. You can tell by overall condition if it is correct. The tractor should still be pretty tight.
