Is this a stupid idea?

I have a JD D I recently purchased. The seller said it had a bad mag and had not ran in several years. The engine was loose and had good compression. I took the head off to clean it up and found there had once been water in the cylinders. Somebody had replaced the head and ran the tractor after the water incident. The pits are not deep, just there. This tractor will only be used for parades or messing around. No work. I have read posts about rapping up tremendous money in perfect JD rebuild jobs. I know this should be bored, new pistons, etc....

I would like to see if the rings are stuck. Is it possible to pull the pistons out, clean up the ring grooves, maybe touch the cylinders with a hone and put everything back together? What are your thoughts?

hone the cylinder if you want.you can buy oversize rings for it if the gap is too much.if the side play in your pistons is to far out of spec a good machine shop can knurl them and bring them out.

Now why didn't I think of that. I've got a 39 H tore down and I was wondering where I was going to get the money to overhaul it. I'll try your idea. Clean it up and put it back together and keep my fingers crossed.
Hope it works.

Scott---

It makes perfect sense to me. They dont all have to be Expo tractors. A wee bit of smoke just adds to the old work horse mystique of the D. There is no wrong answer here. Just dont get all carried away by those great stories of making a pristine Expo machine out of some fence row dweller. Thats somebody elses tractor. Just figure out where you really want to go with this old hoss. A chance to tear it down for, perhaps, rings and some moderate honing without sinking mega bucks into it sounds like the best of the best. I would recommend a NEW head gasket though. Ole Tractorboy must have used up all the luck in that area!

Let us know what way you go with the old D Good Luck!

I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but.. I have a D and a W power unit that were both stuck and had water in the cylinders when I got them. Even though the W had very deep pits, I decided to try new rings and see what happened, since oversize pistons weren't available at the time. As I suspected, it ran very well, and doesn't smoke. The D is the same, runs perfect (idles cleanly at 175 RPM), and doesn't smoke. With the low compression of a D, pits in the bore aren't a big deal. Be very careful unsticking the rings if they are stuck, they are very fragile. Do you think new pistons will make it run $700+ better? As for the Expo tractors Put Put, Wanna guess how many at the last Expo were still stuck? I know for a fact two of them were frozen solid, yet a fly couldn't stand up on the hoods. Go figure. Good luck on your D. If I can be of any help, please don't hesitate to email.

Stuck tractors at shows? Hmm. Maybe I should take the 50, the GP, the A, and the IH A to the next tractor show. I guess the paint isn't good enough though, as it isn't much if any glossier than what they used at the factory. Sounds like the pullers have better tractors.

Tony-----

While I dont doubt you for a minute, I find it incredible that stuck tractors with George Barris paint jobs are allowed at the big Expo events. What a fraud!

In answering Scott I wasnt trying to champion full blown Expo tractors. They were just my example. My point was that there is room for all tastes in old iron and that he neednt feel that he had to try to make that old D into anything other than what it takes to make him happy. Your story adds credence to this. Some get off on multi-thousand dollar lawn ornaments. Personally, Id rather get a ride on Scotts ready for the field D. Id stand up, take a big breath of that smoky exaust and let it talk right into my ear. Whadda rush!!!

I'm with ya there, Putt. I'd rather have a good running machine than one with a custom show car paint job. I like to fix mine up to the point where they were when they were 5 or 10 years old. lookin' good but not pristine. No tractor ever looked that way for long, leastways if it was every used.

I would hone the cylinders with a flat hone then with a ball hone to get them as flat and smooth as posible. Then check your old rings for end gap at the top of where they run. If the end gap is way out of specs then it would probably be worthwhile to buy new rings. With the not perfect cylinder walls it will probably smoke a little but you can tell everyone you are burning the last five gallons of tractor fuel your grandad had saved and the tractor just hasn't warmed up enough to burn it all.

Well --- It would only cost you a head gasget to put it back together and crank her up since it has good compression. The last guy probably honed on those pits a while and decided that they were there to stay or rebore. What do you have to lose. Let us know.

Well, I recently took down an old A and found why it stopped as he had ruined the rod and crankshaft. I turned the shaft myself and redone the rod bearing, freed up the rings with my oak block which is time consuming , but I saved it from the torches ,even used the same head gasket and it runs well for it to sit under the sheds. Just my 2 cents worth. There was a lot more I did but those are the costly items .

I would just hone the cylinders, maybe get new rings and put back together, might check out the wear before going bact together to make sure not too much clearence. Most likely it will be as good as new and last as long as a rebuild costing much more money . There is no need to take something well worn and put everything back to better than new spec's just to let it run from the shed to trailer to show & back to shed. Terry....
