on my old G I usually shut off the fuel and let it run out of gas. In the winter when it sits I leave the drain on the bottom of the carb open, I would rather loose some fuel than have it end up in the crankcase. Have also seed the fuel bowl on the carb freeze and break in the winter because there was water in the fuel. On my old G there really is no other good way to shut it down. I is a 38 so no switch and pulling the throttle back to kill it makes it start hard.

I run my 43 B until it is out of gas. At least I know the gas in the carb will be pretty fresh when I turn the gas back on. Some times I drain the carb bowl just to make sure it is all out. I work the thing and need to make sure it will run when ever I need it.

My 2 cents

I shut mine off then let it run out of gas in the carb and fuel lines. I do this because on some of these old Deere's the gas would run into the pan and make a mess of every thing. Just remember to turn the gas back on before you try to start it.

Amen. I always shut off the fuel and let the tractors run out of gas. I've always been told that John Deere carburetors don't seal off the gas at the float needle real well and the seepage of gas will overflow into the crankcase and dilute the oil. I've been working on my 2010 for the past week or so and had the air intake pipe off the carb. The fuel shut off on it doesn't shut completely off and you can see the gas drip down inside the carburetor. It is a different setup from the earlier cross-draft carburetors and the fuel doesn't get into the crankcase, but it is a bear to start sometimes. While I have it stripped down, I will replace that shut-off valve.
