Best Muffler or Pipe for Sound?

I must admit, until I got my first John Deere(JD60), I didn't listen close to the wonderful sound of a 2 banger. Now I need to make a decision. What I have is an elbow of what's left of a orchard-style exhaust system. I am going to get an exhaust pipe to the top and a muffler of some kind. Should I go with a replacement type muffler or one of those chrome things? I know its a matter of taste but what do most JD people like?

If a oval muffler from the 30 series two cylinder will retro fit then save your hearing with one of them.

Thanks guys, I made my decision, I will put on a OEM muffler. I do have other tractors with striaght pipe and they are loud.

There are some very good (close to OEM) after market mufflers out there. If You opt for noise, go to a car and pickup salvage yard and get a pickup driveline to build one. That spring steel will give you a definite sound.I don't recommend this if your going to be using it for everyday use. I only mount the straight pipe if I'm headed to a pull!

I was going to go to one of those chrome things on my 420 that I use for a working tractor. I was curious if I could live with the noise level so I got a pipe made at an auto exhaust shop (cost $5). It turned out to be LOUD and definitely was a hazard to my ole hearing. So if you are going to use the tractor for extended periods and especially under load, it might save you a lot of ear ringing and "what did you say's" if you take the cheap route for a test run.
