the 4620 is a better tractor as it is newer and has the intercooler, we had one up until not to long ago and it would pull the heck out of a chopper. Alot of people say the are under powered for there weight but i didnt think so it seemed to have plenty of power for pulling a 7-16" plow in black dirt. the only drawbacks to these tractors are they dont have 540 r.p.m pto just 1000, so any pto equipment you have it needs to be the 1000 rpm. Also the 4620 has more hp the 4520 has 122 but the 4620 has 135hp. the 4620 was also avalible with the more expensive powershift tranny where as the 4520 just had the Syncro-Range tranny. hope i've been of some help.
john.

John, according to EPC the 4520 was indeed available with both an intercooler and a powershift transmission. The intercooler was installed on engine serial #303519 and above. It also doesn't make much sense that JD would have a powershift available in the 3020, 4020, 4320 and 4620, but not the 4520. I've never been around a 4520 so I can't say that I've actually seen a 4520 PS, but I doubt that JD's parts system is wrong. Just my two cents.

My info came out of Don Macmillians's book John Deere Tractors and Farm equipment it says that the ps was only offerd in the 4620, i guess they didnt have a heavy enough one until the 4620? after all it was only made for a year or 2. it says here, "...the 4520 was replaced by the 135hp 4620 with turbocharging and intercooling, a first on a farm tractor....Syncro-Range was standard on both , but the 4620 also had the powershift option." i dunno you tell me.

All I can say is that I checked JD EPC (electronic parts catalog) and a 4520 operator's manual - and they both show a powershift transmission. So I guess until somebody that actually knows for a fact joins the discussion, we won't know for sure. But like I said, I really doubt if John Deere's publications are incorrect. I did also check a 4320 manual - and it was not available with a powershift. Are you sure that's not what you're thinking of? As far as the intercooling, I can't say anything except that it's shown in the 4520 parts book also.

G-MAN - no powershift on 4320 - still one on 4520, though - nt
