Side counsels , 1969 and later , have a couple other differences not already mentioned :
Diesels are 12 volt elec systems with alternator
Diesels have the small CB inj pump with electric fuel shut off rather than the old throttle shut off . They tell me you can't hardly find parts for these small pumps and the electric shut off . That's for the 69 - 71 models , in 72 I think they went back to the large pump . At one time Deere had a change over kit for the 69-71's that included pump and all the lines . Some of the small pumps were changed over .
I think the 69's and up didn't have the trans disconnect for the PowerShift , also didn't have the shift speed adjustment valve .
Side con's also had a new design 3 ring piston with keystone top ring which was a needed improvement also different sleeve and O'rings that did away with the "weep holes" . This sleeve and piston kit was made available for the older models a couple years later .
They had a hydraulicly engaged pto of some type on the syncrorange , powershift was still the same I think .
Probably missed some but that's all I can think of now .
I'll agree with the other post that sometimes they are not worth the extra $$$ . An older one with the improved pistons is a good runner . My self I think the older ones with the big pump run better are snappier etc, they have a better sound to them. I have a '64 with the old big injectors , pretty good old tractor for 38 yrs old .

Here is a couple of other things I have noticed that are different. The instrument panel is lighted by fiber optics on the consoles where there early ones had a light that shined on the dash. There is also a difference on the panel that houses your light switch. On my early 4020 there is one bolt that allows it to be removed whereas on the console you remove to side panels to get in there. Also some of the early models did not have differential lock whereas I think all the consoles did. Consoles also have dry air filters where early ones had the oil bath filters. There were some upadates to the fuel filter set up and also the electrical system I beleive. I am sure there are probably a few other differences but these are some of the ones that I have noticed. For the price that consoles are bringing over the earlier models compared more user ease you are much better off with an earlier model in my opinion of course. I have ran earlier models and if you don't know any different you won't pay the extra grand or so for a console.

Not all of the 'late' models had differential lock; also, some of the 'early' models had dry air filter.

Herm, a 4020 or 3020 with side console has the hydraulic and rockshaft levers located in a console on the right side of the seat, rather than on the dash. That and some other changes is the main difference between an "early" 4020 and a "late" 4020. These changes took place at serial #201,000 on the 4020 and #123,000 on the 3020. These later year tractors are generally a little more sought after, as the side console makes them easier and handier to operate.
