Clooney, I got my axles reinstalled in my G last night, and tonight I went ahead and installed the outer axle seals (felt washers and outer cover). I went ahead and drove the outer covers in until they were all the way in, as I couldn't remember how far they were in. Is this the proper procedure? I guess it really shouldn't matter, but I was just curious if they were supposed to be in that far or not. If they're not, I'll have to slide one of my hubs back on and beat the axles out a little bit, as that is how I removed them (at the same time I was removing the axles) to keep from damaging the outer cover. I was just curious about any procedure you might have used. Thanks in advance for the info. BTW - the axles do clear the outer lip of the covers, but just barely.

Thanks for the input, guys. I will take another look at them tonight and see what I can do. The felts are brand new and after I got them installed the axles seemed to turn quite a bit harder than before so maybe I'd better look. The reason I drove them clear in was so that I could make sure they were square. I guess it's probably not that critical as they just seal grease and I probably won't put 1000 hrs on the tractor the rest of my life. Thanks again.

G-MAN, I don't know how to answer this. ~It depends on the thickness of the felts, whether or not the felts are new & how much the bearing is worn.
~Before assembly, I usually install the felt between the inner bearing spacer sleeve & the outer cover & then with some pressure on the felt, see how much of the inner spacer is sticking through the outer cover. When assembling I drive the cover in until the inner sleeve is sticking through the same amount.
~Seeing as you have already driven the cover all the way in you might try pulling the inner [the one by the bull gear] bearing away from the race a little then see if the axle shaft has any end play [with a reasonable amount of force]. That will show you how tight you have the felt squeezed in there. ~If it is too tight it probably won't hurt, but will accelerate the wear on the felt.

Hi G-MAN, Don't know about the rights or wrongs of it, but I've always had good luck loosening the nut on the axle just a little bit, then placing a block of wood the right thickness between the axle nuts, hold the nut so it can't turn, and then just turn the axle counter clockwise and let the threads push the axle outword. Have never had one that it didn't work on. Good luck with your "G"!!!!!
