I am trying to find out the model number is on my John Deere one bottom plow on steel. I need a shear (point) for my plow and I need to know what the model number is before I can start looking for parts. Any help, suggestions, or leads would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Andrew----- --

Nothing of any value showed up on the back of my plow point. A logo-ized JDeere and some casting code icons. I have a question for you. Do you want to keep this plow stock as it came from the factory or are you just wanting to have a plow to work with that will do a good job for you? The reason that I ask is that if youre just wanting something to plow with and dont mind bastardizing it a bit you might be interested in something that my Dad discovered, years ago. He had an old Oliver 2x16 plow with one bad moldboard (His darlin son backed into something and broke it). If memory serves me correctly it was a Plowmaster 100 (one that has the crank depth adjustment on top). He pirated the remaining good bottom to put on a JD #51 single bottom plow. Im fairly sure it was a bolt on swap. If you were interested in going this way those old Oliver 2x16 plows go cheap at farm auctions. This would give you Raydex bottoms on your JD plow. Points, moldboards and everything else are readily available at TSC or whatever you have near you.

Andrew-----

I pulled the point off my old Model 51 single bottom plow tonight. Tomorrow Ill wire brush it and let you know what it says. In the mean time you have some work to do. Bob and Will are right. You MUST determine the size and type of bottom that you have.

I happen to have a later 51 with the enclosed clutch. It has the Deere 16 bottom which was pretty common. But if you have some other size or, for instance, a Syracuse bottom all numbers change.

Ill let you know what numbers my point (or share) yields when I get it cleaned up.

Question, Putt Putt.

I have a 51 with a 14" bottom. Is it the same moldboard? I will have to get the numbers off of it yet. Mine has the pre 1944 open clutch and the post 37 brackets on it.

One 14" is not much work for my 43B. Would like a bigger bottom on it.

Thanks, Will P

Will-----

I really dont know. My impression is that the moldboards are different, but I cant substantiate that. Too bad JD doesnt put out a parts catalogue CD for tillage implements. And another for harvesting implements. And another for hay making stuff. And another----- ----- !!!

One sixteen was a fair load for a pre 41 B in this area. Your 43 should haul one around in fine style. I would think one fourteen would be appropriate for an H where the farmer didnt want to mess around with the under carriage lift up plow.

Andrew, Trying to determine the number of a plow point (share) from the model number of the plow is similar to figuring out what bit was in a router from the model of the router motor. The reason is that a lot of different bottoms were available for each plow to suit conditions and farmer preference. You need to find a number on the back of the point or if that is missing, see if there is one on the moldboard and frog so a parts man who knows his plows can determine which bottom assembly you have. It is as complicated as it sounds but it is no fun trying to install a point that won't fit. I think Will is correct about it being a #51. Bob

First thing to do is find the number that is stamped into the plow beam. Also mention if this plow is a sulky (the kind you ride on) or a trailer plow for a tractor. That will help people find the model number of the plow so we could go from there.

The John Deere plow I have is a one bottom pull type trip plow on steel. The plow needs a shear and a plow depth lever. Does anyone know what year this plow might be? Thanks again or you help!

Ok, it probably is a #51 one bottom plow. Made 34-48 Beam number 614. Should be behind the JOHN DEERE on the beam. Mine is a 14" plow. I will have to look and see what number is on the share. The book number from Deere is PC-253 and is still avalible. There are some brackets on the plow that will date it as an early 51 and late 51. Is the cluch open or enclosed? I saw your post earlyer this week but no one must be helping you. So send me some pictures and I will help out.
