I recently got a 48 A. I bought an owners manual and went to change the fluids. I changed the engine oil and filter and can see how to check/change the powr-trol fluids as well as how to drain the transmission, but don't see where to check or add the transmission fluid. Where do you add the fluid? Also, what transmission fluid would you recommend? I was thinking of TSC 140 weight.

Thanks,

Tom

You add the gear oil to the pipe plug opening on the right side of the PTO housing area just behind the rear axle. It is full when the oil is at the bottom of that plug opening. I would flush it with deisel fuel and drive it around the block once then add your gear oil. 140wt oil is ok and others use the 90wt oil. About the best thing you can do for yourself now is to visit your deere dealer and have him order you an operators manual for the tractor.

Jerry,

Thanks for the info. I will look for the pipe plug this evening. I have the operators manual, but could not find any info about where the transmission fluid went in (maybe an oversight on my part). Sounds like I can use 90wt oil and be OK.

I appreciate your help,

Tom

The late A like many Waterloo 2 cyl.'s share the same fill plug on the rear axle cover, but the rear axle has seperate drain plug under the rear axle housing by the draw bar.

I have my 48 A's rearend torn down, but have been unable to remove the drain plug. Is there a special tool or procedure for removing the plug? (yeah I know...righty-tighty lefty-loosy heh heh)

I've always had good luck removing stubborn pipe plugs with the following procedure. If you have a torch, heat the entire plug up red hot, and then allow it to cool thoroughly. The plug will shrink enough, that when combined with the taper shape of pipe threads, you will be able to turn it out easily. I've even been able to turn some out with my fingers when using this method - it sure saves a lot of skinned knuckles and rounded out holes.

Did the same thing last weekend, got a 3/4 drive ratchet from the neighbor and turned it out. Tried a bolt with a 3/4 inch head and a pipe wrench but musta been too much torque for the bolt, twisted it right off. The plug was in there good!

Enjoy!

What I do is take a square headed bolt and fit it into the plug recess then a pipe wrench to the bolt. Hasn't failed me yet although those plugs are kind of a pain. Hope this works for you.

Do the late "B"s also have a separate drain plug for the rear?

Yes I believe they all do. I only have a few early styled B's though.
