I am trying out a 4020D, a 1965 standard. It has good power and starts easily but upon starting, it smokes like crazy till it warms up. It'll also smoke after is idles for a few minutes and you crack the throttle. It smells like unburned diesel fuel, not anti-freeze, and the coolant level stays full and is clean. Is this just a case of dirty injectors, or something more serious? Thanks in advance for any answers. Ted

Sounds to me like you probably are just having problems with excessive fueling. Someone could have just turned the fuel delivery up at some point. Check for that and also check the intake system - make sure the air cleaner is clean and not restricted in anyway. You could also just have a set of severely worn nozzles that are delivery too much fuel or not atomizing it properly for good combustion of the entire charge. Providing it starts well and has good power, I wouldn't suspect anything serious. Do check the oil and smell it to check for fuel contamination. If you remove the nozzles for testing, I would also perform a compression check just for good measure. Good luck with your tractor.
