I have a 4020 diesel, powershift, I'm working on restoring. Not sure what I should put on for rear tires. There are bald 20.8 x 34's on it now. Should I go back to 18.4 x 34's? I may use it for a little pulling some day, but nothing serious. It won't be doing much field work any more either, more of a hobby tractor. Should I look at a radial? I wouldn't mind spending a little extra money if it was the right thing to do. Or I may just look for some used tires to put on in the mean time. Any suggestions? Also, are the stock rims 16 or 18 inches wide and does it help to make the rims a couple of inches wider for pulling?

Tom, I would imagine when you price a new set of 20.8-34's that your decision will be made. They are not a common tire anymore and they are priced about twice what an 18.4-34 runs. If I were you I would buy some "step-up" rims to go from 34" to 38" and use 18.4-38's. They are a very common tire and you will probably be able to do this with new tires and rims for less money than new 20.8's. The 18.4-38's will be nearly the same height your current tires are, too. Hope this helps. Mike

Could you explain a little more about a "step-up" rim? What are they? Where do you find them? Any reasons not to use them?

Thanks

Tom, a step-up rim has a deeper dish to the rim allowing it to be fitted with a bigger tire than your cast center originally allowed. An original "double bevel" rim is flat across it's profile with the exception of where the rims clamps go. Many of the new tractors use some form of these rims. It is not unusual for new tractors to use the same cast center on 38", 42", and 46" tires. I have a set of these rims on one of my 4020's and they work just fine and look pretty good, too. Most any implement or tire dealer should be able to get you a set. I am well pleased with mine. Hope this helps. Mike
