I have been planning in my head how I will rebuild the engine in my 49 B eventually. Well, today I looked at it, and for the first time, I noticed that the front part of the frame seems to be welded to where it connects to the rear.

Does anyone have an idea of WHY someone would do this??? The normal bolts are there and seem to be doing their job - but I have no clue why it would have been welded!? Has anyone ever seen this before?

And finally... does anyone have any idea how I might go about breaking the weld? Or is there another way of taking the engine apart without taking the front portion of the frame off?

Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Hans, While the late styled B would pull 4-row equipment just fine the frame would crack at or near the location you discribe when runing over rough ground with equipment raised. Many are welded there becouse of this. Bet if you checked you would find your tractor was used with 4-row equipment.

CLW, you were right on target.

Originally, my tractor was used with some sort of 4-row cultivator (way before it brought into my family), so with what you said, I'm sure that's what happened to it and why it's welded.

Thanks for the info!

I can't explain why someone welded your tractor up (maybe the bolts stripped?) but I do know you don't have to remove the front frame to rebuild a B. You can remove the head, pistons, block, crank, etc. and completely rebuild that B with the frame in place.

Thank you for the reply! I am relieved to hear that I will still be able to get everything apart with the frame in place! I am definately a novice to this - I purchased the video tape "Engine Rebuild for John Deere Tractors" from this site to help guide me through everything. In the video they made it seem as if it were necessary to "properly" rebuild the engine, but I guess they probably just did it so it would be more visually informative for the video. Thanks again - I was worried!
