Just started working my JD 420U for first time in a serious way...after about 15 minutes of grading or digging the oil pressure drops off the "normal" green mark and into the white low pressure range. Doesn't do it if you don't work the tractor. What could be the problem? Am using straight 20W oil...tractor blows smoke slightly when starting up...has sufficient power...is not overheating..
anybody have any ideas?
Thanks

Reefsan, the usual cause of low oil pressure in the 40-430 is worn cam, main & rod bearings but it could be almost anything from a worn pump to defective gauge to diluted oil.
~Try to find a known good oil pressure gauge to make sure you are reading the correct pressure. [pressure is read at wide open throttle]
~It wouldn't hurt to install new oil, yours could be diluted with gasoline.
~There is [or at least is supposed to be] a washer under the oil filter element that if missing [most are as they get thrown out with the old filter] is supposed to cause low oil pressure, but I haven't ever seen much of an oil pressure difference by adding it. The washer is the M-88T & might be worth a try if missing. See if the oil filter is kind of sagged down on the lower mounting at it's base & if it is, adding the washer & a new filter "might" help.
~You might try going to 30 weight oil as that won't thin as much when it gets hot.

Thanks Clooney,
It is missing the washer, so I'll try that...also will switch to some 30 weight oil. When I originally changed the oil after I bought it, it did have a lot of milky looking fluid in it which doesn't appear to have come from the cooling system. I figured it was condensation from not having chnaged the oil regularly (all the fluids had the milky look).
Hopefully it isn't the bearings. If it is, can I work it for a while or should I get busy finding someone to rebuild it?
thanks for your help...
