THE 4640 WAS ABOUT 155 HP OUT OF FACTORY BUT MANY GUYS RUN THESE ALOT HIGHER. GOOD STRONG TRACTORS.

I bought a 4640 new in '81 , Quad Range , had it for 4,000 hrs . I took the inj pump off at 500 hrs and had it callibrated , set the torque rise up and ran it at 200hp . Nothing else was done to it . Probably used 2-3qts oil in 100 hrs it was the best tractor I've ever owned . I would still have it today but I bought a 1982 4840 at a neighbors closeout auction and sold my 46 to another neighbor at the same time . The 46 is still going strong they haven't had any trouble with it has over 5500hrs . I bought the 48 because of the powershift , it is handier for what I use it for and for the family to run .
Except for that I can't notice much difference in the two , 48 has bigger fuel tank is about all . My old 4640 was always a good running tractor .
I will add that the '81 and later tractors had needle bearings in the differential gears and the engine had a crankshaft driven oil pump , two features which I think are an improvement .

There is a section of this site for tractors from '75 and up called Today's Tractors, but I'll give you a little run down on the 4640. Basically an excellent tractor - 466 engine - rated 155 PTO hp - although I've never seen even a bone stock one with less than 170. Was available with both the quad-range and powershift, whereas the larger 4840 was only available with a powershift. Both are good, solid tractors and there are dozens still running in my territory. No real problems that I've noticed, but like all tractors, one that hasn't been maintained properly or has a lot of hours will probably need some work. Some prefer the 15 speed powershift in 50 series and up tractors, but I like the 8 speed just fine - both are good trannies. 40 series Deeres are probably about my favorite tractor (after the two-cylinders of course). I don't think you can go wrong with a 4640.

As far as I'm concerned JD could have given all the engineers an early retirement bonus and sent them home when they made the 4640/4840. I don't need a computer to tell when I need to change gears or inject more fuel. Those tractors ride good because you are sitting over the rear axle not on a parrots perch like a 8300 JD, 1086 IH, or G1000 Vista MM where you get whiplash everytime the front end changes elevation. The 48 has another lift assist cylinder for the 3pt therefore more lift capacity.

RIGHT ON Scott , the 44 , 46 and 4840's were about the simplest , rugged and most dependable tractors that Deere or any one else ever built .
I would like to see how these electronic fuel systems and all the other bell and whistle systems are working after 20 years and 10,000hrs .
I guess I'm in a minority , they say everybody wants all these new gadgets , and everyone that has them just loves them . There isn't a thing that I can't fix on the 40's and that's the way I like it . I have only a few more years to go and I can safely say I will never own one of those ELECTRONIC wonders no matter what color .
