Anyone know how to engage the PTO on a 420W? Supposively, I have a 2 stage clutch, however, PTO does not engage when lever is moved. I am new at this...I just hear a grinding noise. I have tried to position the clutch in several spots with nothing in return!

Help!

Skip, I have had the same problem on a 2 stage clutch. Kill the engine, then put the pto lever in gear, then start the engine up. If the pto is running now, this means the small clutch disc is not dis-engaging. It is a problem with the pressure plate, clutch disc, or adjustment. If you are wanting to use the tractor, you can use it this way. If you are hooked to a mower or bushog, the starter will spin the blades while cranking. You can still use the tractor if you get an overide attachment to go on the pto shaft, then hook the mower driveshaft to this.

the two stage clutch requires special adjustment and can only be made with the tractor seperate. There is a special tool. I made the tool off the IT manual instructions. The two stage clutch is extremely pricey and probably only available from JD. The power arrangement is handled with a dual shaft arrangment. Basically this was a rather poor arrangment and JD went away from the ideal. You clutch made work, however like the other post said engage the PTO at transmission and run then see if it will disengage under load at the mower/bushog. It could possibly break loose it if just frozen. Good luck.
