4010 seat question

The seat (deluxe type) on my 4010 has been rocking from side to side since I purchased it. I have replaced the bushings and the links which were very worn out. The spring and the other parts looks OK. The front part of the seat asembly looks like it twists when I rock the seat. Is there something that fits between the links and the tractor that cushions the twisting front?

If you would find out that the white plastic rollers are the problem, find some of the copper, not brass starter bushings, at your local parts house. I fixed my brothers 4020 seat that way by putting them in the plastic roller and sliding them on the peg/shaft. This seat had alot of rocking movement side to side, the shaft was worn so new plastic rollers didn't help. The reason for the copper bushing is that they are really thin and flexible, they will not flake apart like some of the particle bronze ones do. Made a new seat out of the old one.

When you replaced the bushings and links did you check the bolts and holes the bushings fit in? 1/16 of slop in any of the holes will transfer into 2-3" of movement at the seat. You may have to weld the holes up and re-drill them or try to find a low hour seat frame at a salvage yard.

If you have replaced the links and bushings, I would take a look at the plastic rollers - when they get worn, they can cause a lot of play. The clearance may seem minimal at the roller, but by the time you get up to the seat cushion, they move a lot. Make sure the rollers are also properly shimmed out against the sides of the rails, as side to side play can get excessive. Also check that the seat is bolted firmly to the rockshaft housing - I believe there are 4 1/2" bolts that look like lug bolts to hold it on, but I'm not completely sure anymore. Just my two cents.

I don't believe the plastic rollers are the problem. Much of the rocking is located below the rollers. The housing that covers the spring is also rocking with the seat. Is there nothing that connects the front of the spring housing with the rockshaft housing?

I guess you've got me stumped - this is one of those situations where I wish I could see the tractor to get a better idea of what is going on. If the links and bushings are new, and the rollers are good and properly shimmed, I don't know what else to tell you. You said the the spring looked good, but how about the bushings in the end of the spring? Unless you have something cracked or broken somewhere down in the mount, I can't think of what else it would be. I don't know how much twisting it takes to be excessive. If you're a pretty good sized guy and it moves some at the top of it's travel, that would be expected. I'll do some more looking in the service manual and post back if I find something I've missed - although links, bushings and rollers have tightened up the ones I've worked on pretty well.
