It wasn't stuck but no compression, we tore it down and found some sticking valves and the cylinder walls are somewhat rusted, not pitted. Also the block and head have hairline cracks around the drain plug area. The cylinders appear to be OK other than the rust and the cumbustion chamber doesn't look bad either. Can we weld or epoxy the cracks successfully? And can we just hone the rust out of the cylinder? I may be able to get a picture to post if that would help. We would appreciate any advice.

Hey!

I rebuilt one of these a couple of winters ago... look in the rings around where the valves go, a crack can hide down there... as it did on mine! I'd have the head rebuilt while you are at it, or at least check to make sure that things aren't worn too much. If you don't have a micrometer that you can use of your own, have a trusted engine shop check it out for you.

Good Luck!

Hi ToddF, check closely around the carbon ring at the head end of the cylinders for cracks. My '51 A was cracked there and it was easy to miss until we removed the carbon. Best of luck!

I would definitely try to hone the cylinders out, as long as there is not a substantial ridge. If it's just light "flash rust" you'll probably be okay. As far as the cracks go, a little JB weld might fix them right up. I would also try to use one of the commercial cooling system sealers - I've had good luck with Barr's Leaks in the past. I saw an article once in Green Magazine on using a little electric pump to circulate coolant in a two-cylinder with no water pump to help the sealer work better, but I don't know how necessary it would be. It would seem to me that if you get it up to and keep it at operating temp for a half hour or so, it would work all right anyway.
