I assumed, because of Bob being on the forum some, that this might be a good place to do business. Didn't happen that way. Is anyone having good luck with this guy. His prices are higher than others, shipping is way more than actual costs and he refuses any payment except credit card. What's your experience?

Everybody needs to make a buck to pay their bills. If you want to shop for the best price you can. Some people stay loyal to a vendor who provides a good product at a reasonable price. Remember, cheapest is not always best and knowledge and reliability are worth something. I don't know Bob but I do know what makes this old world turn (P&L).

Thanks for all the response, both postive and negative. I didn't have a beef, a problem or a complaint with Bob, I just related my experience for the benefit of the forum. I am suprised at those people that know they have been ripped of on shipping and are still satisfied with the service. Just shows, I guess, that it's the American way to take the shaft and learn to like it. But we still live in the free world (HA) and all have an oppinion. Good shopping....

Will: I have learned that when you find a vendor you are happy with, try to use them all the time. In my case, It is Melanie at Sharps. Fair price and knows her old JD parts. However, I needed a pair of good radiator side panels for my 36 A project and she did not have any good ones she was willing to sell me. I ask on this board if anyone had a good set and got a reply from California. The price of the parts was fair but the shipping was inflated (in my opinion). I need these parts badly so I sent the gentleman a check. If you have the parts someone else needs, I think it is bad business pratice to inflate the shipping just to make more money on the parts. For myself, I would rather have paid more for the side panels and not felt I was over paying on shipping. Either way, I'm just happy he had what I needed. As for Bob, I have never heard anything bad about him. I will contact him if I need a part I can't get from Sharps or someone on this board. There are only a few parts guys that you can trust fully and we lost a good one when Shorty left us. Some parts guys remind me of used car salesman...enough said..!!

Will,
I have no experience with this vendor, but I am glad you posted this. I know from my own experience at work that some vendors will quote prices lower than competitors, then inflate the shipping costs. I can't imagine why he will only accept credit card paymemts, because the credit card company takes a piece of everything he sells. I can understand why he won't take personal checks, because I am sure he has been burned several times, but money orders should be acceptable. I don't take exception to you posting your beef here, because I think it is legitimate. On the other hand, if you have found people who can provide you with cheaper parts, you should share their names with the rest of us, and that will give you a little more credibility, and it might tune up this particular vendor. (It might also give him a chance to defend himself.)
Having said all that, the price of an item is basically determined by how much you are willing to pay for it at the time. (Usually, within two weeks, I've found cheaper prices for almost every purchase I've every made.) At any rate, thanks for the heads up. I am not convinced that I shouldn't deal with this guy, but I am not convinced that I should cross him off my list either. I will just shop around for prices like I always do, and pay a little more attention to shipping charges.

I have dealt with Bob a number of times and I'm very satisfied.I found him honest helpful and knowledgeable.I found prices on new and used model M,G and720 parts very reasonable, and I did shop around. If anyone finds his prices high, why not buy somewhere else instead of badmouthing or baiting someone else to badmouth him here?If you have a problem with Bob,tell Bob ,not everyone. That is just plain wrong. I find Bob to be reasonable on the parts I inquired about and bought. The thing I was disappointed in was the shipping charges. It was very inflated. This was after asking what shipping would be..(he said actual UPS) I ship many parts and I know what shipping will run.
One thing I learned is to ask what shipping will be in a dollar amount.

I live in a rural area and have to take parts I ship to a drop off point for UPS pickup. They add on a surcharge of $3.00 per item. I do not ship enough to have UPS stop at my place so I really have no choice.

I undersand that. My drop off site charges $2.00.
But even if he don't have pick-up I was charged a "surcharge" many times over.

Will, I buy parts on a regular basis from everyone, such as K&K, Leland Swantz, ect. I just call them, tell them what I need and to ship it and I will have a check on the way. I do not use credit cards. I purchased from Bob one time and he was very fair on the price, but he does overcharge on shipping and would not send it until my check had cleared I guess. I had to call him again to see it it was shipped. But I was satisfied with the parts and price on them.

Most parts guys inflate the shipping charges.
It's still ripping you off,but they think you
won't notice.The worst I've seen is polks,they
sent me the wrong steering wheel for a 420,it
cost me $10.00 less to send it back than I paid
to recieve it.

Well Mr. 207.91.7.98 or Mr. Thinker. This is the place to voice your opinion about online parts sales and online tractor businesses. People that sell parts on the internet must remember that opinions on their business practices are only a click away. To do business on the internet is to live or die by the way you treat customers and while Will didn't exactly complain about Bob at Tripple G he did raise the concern that his prices were higher than his competition. I for one an glad he brought the subject up and will use the information to guide my future online parts purchases.

I would sure hope we can look for people with parts on this site, Bob set me up with a governor drive gear for my unstyled B. He responded to my post in just a few hours! My local dealer wanted twice the money for the gear, and they never did come up with one. Bob shipped my gear UPS and had it here in 3 days. Bob is the FIRST one I am going to call for parts in the future. You want to here a smoke job, a popular supplier sold me a upper radiator pipe (with the proper bend) for $70.00!! That is a smoke job. I could have went down to Midas and got the same thing for $20 or less. It was just exhaust pipe, that I am supposed to have brazed into the casting.
I am new to the tractor game, and most of the items. which amazingly, are still available are pretty cheap, compared to parts for my 911. My 2 cents worth.

I believe the top radiator pipe is sealed with O-rings in grooves inside the castings at both ends -- not brazed. I coated the O-rings with RTV before assembly of the pipe into the castings so it would slide into place easier and seal once the ends were installed in the proper position. It has not leaked since.

Bob, the older tractors do indeed have the upper pipe brazed in the casting that bolts onto the top of the block - you have to get into the first numbered-series tractors before they started using o-rings and a separate tube.

Will, Bob has treated me very fair on two seperate transactions and in one case the late Shorty Dear wanted $100.00 for a part Bob sold me for $30.00. So high prices can happen anywhere, "price shopping" seems to have become a necessity whether you are buying corn flakes, auto parts or trying to support this tractor hobby!

I have had nothing but good luck with Bob. I have found him to be a man of his word with the quality of parts, description of parts, and return policy. If you want high prices, call Denglers or Polk. You might find that Bob's prices are in line if not much less.

I'm sure someone is happy with this guy or he wouldn't still be in business. I've no reason to do business with either of the people you mentioned, but somebody likes doing business with them or they would'nt still be in business.
My experience with Bob was...I needed a couple clutch covers...Bob wanted something over seventy dollars for the parts and shipping and refused any payment except credit card. I ordered the same two clutch covers from Restoration Supply...$50.00 delivered and on open account at that. $20. is TOO much difference on a $50, order for the exact parts.

Will one of the greatest things about this country is our freedom. If you don't like it...don't buy it... beyond what you think it is worth...don't buy it.

I am making a big assumption that you have spoken with Bob before posting. One final thing, I'm sure you are aware that there isn't a national price book for 50-70 year old parts.

Good point, Burns. I am also familiar with the parts business, mostly for cars, and I am always amazed at the trouble and expense people will go to to "save" money. Many times, they will travel large distances, make several long-distance phone calls, or set for several hours at a computer screen. For what? Is their time worthless? I use certain suppliers when I need parts for my business. If I had time to shop (which I don't) I might save 5%-10% on a specific item, but I will burn up the profit trying to save money!! To me, it is worth the alleged extra money to patronize suppliers that are an asset to my shop so that they will stay in business and be there when I need them. Saving money always costs me money, either in time spent in shopping or in inferior parts. It costs money for these parts suppliers to stay in business. All the best....Greg

I haven't dealt with the guy myself - although I did speak to him on the phone once. I thought he was okay to talk to, although I do notice that he does use this board to promote his business. I've seen several instances where a person has been looking for a source for a particular part, and he has posted with his business info. This isn't a classified board, but you will never get away from people looking for parts sources and individual parts. I don't think businesses should use this board to sell parts. If they want to, it should be done by email.
