I have a friend who had his pump completely rebuilt and it is knocking. The tractor is a 70 model and the man who rebuilt it is stumped. When working the lift the knock stops. Any ideas Thanks

The other two guys had good suggestions, and I'll throw in my two cents too. Check to make sure the pump is correctly timed to the engine. It may sound crazy, but it is possible for it to be out of time. I believe the little dot in the end of the pump input shaft should be at the one o'clock position when the engine is at TDC for number one cylinder. I have seen those pumps make a lot of noise if not correctly timed to the engine, although it seems to be more common on the four cylinder tractors. Also check the condition of the pump coupler and the hardware to make sure everything is okay - although I would assume that the coupler was replaced when the pump was worked on.

The hyd. pump on a 4020 only pumps when hyd. pressure is called for. The tractor probably has a small internal hyd. leak at a valve, diff. lock valve, or steering valve. The pump is only stroking a very litte bit to compensate for the leak, hence the knocking sound. When you activate a hyd. circuit, the pump opens up fully and the noise goes away. You can try to locate the leak by starting the tractor when it is cold and let it idle for 5-10 minutes and feel the remotes, the diff. lock valve, the steering valve and roskshaft housing near where the valve is. If any are warm to the touch, that valve(s) is leaking internally

It's the stroke control valve. The pump is not going out of stroke.
