Re: ANTIQUE TRACTOR QUESTION in reply to LANDON, 05-13-2002 11:48:46
I recently acquired a 1954 John Deere Model 60. After installing an electronic breaker-less kit I realized that the battery indicator was showing discharge. A generator shop suggested that I should convert the generator to a negative ground as ths old system was positive ground. The guage is still showing negative on the guage when I rev up the engine. What is wrong? I am a novice and any advice would be appreciated. I would also like to get a wiring diagram of the electrical system, because the wires may be crossed. Please help

1930's can be considered antique but the 1940's are too new for that!

And doesn't it just irritate the he!! out of you to have some wrench or other tool that you used as a kid and still have (and use) referred to as "antique"?

Heck, maybe I should be referred to as "antique" myself.

Seriously, I've found that most people seem to call something "antique" if it's older than they are.

Our local tractor club, during the two annual pulls they conduct, pre 1940 are considered as "antique" and pre 1960 as "classic".

This by no means defines antique verses classic, but that's the rules we go by.

I say anything from the 40's or 50's is an Antique. My yougest tractor is a 71.

Tractors don't age the same as automobiles. Different people use different yardsticks to measure the "antiqueness" of tractors. You'll get answers that range from "anything before 1960" to "anything over 25 years old." In the latter instance, a 1977 tractor doesn't seem that old to me.

I guess a good dividing line would be the time frame when modern diesels came onto the scene: those with more than two cylinders (1960 in the case of a John Deere) or the point IH came out with pure diesels (those that started on diesel without switching from gas). Even that has its share of arguments.

This is one of those topics like "What's your favorite flavor of ice-cream?" There's really no objective answer. Happy tractorin' everyone!!

thanks, i have a 6030 john deere and was wondering if it was an antique. like you said, an automobile is antique if it is over 25 years old or older. the 6030 does not seem to me to be antique to me but it is over 25 years old
