70D Project: Need help woth P/S pump seals

I had to remove the P/S pump today because I have just a seep (a drip every few minutes) at the front between the pulley and the pump. I have no other leaks on the tractor, and this one has got to go.

I suspect I have a bad seal, or I damaged it at installation (wouldn't be the first time). I will also check to see that I don't have a fine line on the shaft, and I'll replace that shaft this time if I see anything.

The question:

I searched the archives and read through over 50 responses, and I feel I need some clarification. My I&T book is for a 70D, so it covers the one-piece double lip seal, not the newer two-seal upgrade.

Since I originally installed the seals, a lot of folks have discussed the proper orientation of the seals. I want to make certain I have it right, in case that was my problem. I need to know placement of the pair of seals in the front and the pair of seals and spacer in the back.

I'm not sure what is known as front or back of a seal, so please tell me like Open end or Closed End.

I really appreciate your help here guys. After I get pump apart, the problem will hopefully be apparent.

Frank I just installed new pump seals on my 520.The first set of seals ,front and rear, should be installed with the open end facing the pump.the second set should be open end facing away from the pump front and rear. The spacer should be between the two seals on the shaft side of the pump only. Dont forget to fill pump with fluid when your done for a good prime. Hope this helps.

Thak you Dan !

So that I understand, I hope this sketch works. So the pairs of seals are installed face to face. That makes sense to me, as the bottom seals hold the p/s fluid in, and the outer seals hold air and engine oil out.

Please check my work !

Thanks !
