I bought a little 5 foot John Deere trailer type bush hog the other day, and in vey tall, thick grass the 3020 pto clutch is slipping. Any thoughts? Thank you. By the way the bush hog was only $50, cant hardly pass that up.

Try adjusting the control linkage so the PTO lever will require more effort to engage it. Remove the light switch panel ahead of your toes, under the dash the PTO clutch control rod will have a long hex nut in the middle of it locked in place with a jam nut. The long hex nut is left hand thread on one end and right hand thread on the other, by turning it one way it will lengthen the control rod and turning it the other it will shorten it. Just loosen the jam nut and adjust as needed. Good Luck, Dave W.

If it needs adjustment it's to late, the tractor
will need to be split to fix.Adjustments only
control throw out bearing clearance, not pressure
on the disc which keeps clutch from slipping.

Ray, The traction clutch works the way you say but the PTO clutch like twopop said works in reverse. The PTO bearing only runs when the PTO is (ENGAGED) This bearing pushes on the PTO finger to engage the PTO. When the PTO lever is moved forward it pushes on the fingers causing pressure plates to collapse and pinch the PTO drive disk. All 25, 30, 40, and 5010 and 25, 30, 40, 43, 45, 46 and 5020,s and 6030's work this way. The perma clutch units in the 30, 40, 50 and 55 series Waterloo tractors engage the PTO and traction clutch by pushing a on the finger with bearing to engage the clutch elements along a wet disk type clutch. This perma clutch setup was one of John Deere's BEST!! This information applies to Syncrorange and Quadrange transmissions only. Power shifts are completely different as clutches are applied by hydraulic pistons.

The exception is the 2510 syncro. It uses an over center type PTO clutch pressure plate assembly. The levers snap over center, and an extra lip on the release bearing pulls the fingers back over center when disengaged.

HTR, All the tractors that I mentioned including the 2510 the PTO lever / engage mechanism is an over center linkage system. Some do vary in actual parts but all function alike. The 2510 is no different in functionality. The fingers on the 2510 do not lock over center just the bearing / linkage does the over center latching. Not to call you wrong but sorry. The spring force on the finger is what returns the lever back to the off position once the linkage is released from its over center position. The lip on the throw out bearing does not hook under the fingers and if it did you would not be able to put the tractor together let alone get it apart. All the other models have this same step as well and it has nothing to do with releasing the clutch. There are clutches that do function the way you described, my Dad had an SC Case with a hand clutch that worked that way as well as a D4 Cat that the fingers snapped over center.

Everybody knows you are the man here on the JD board, and you are right 99.9 percent of the time. The other mechanical engaged PTO clutches old 4020, 3010, and such, are over center in the linkage, and holds pressure on the PTO fingers to engage the clutch. The 2510 has the over center clutch in the pressure plate, and the bearing does not hold pressure on the fingers when the PTO is engaged. The operating collar, with the double lip, on the front of the PTO bearing, and the fingers for the PTO pressure plate are so configured that when the fingers are tripped forward the they drop into the first lip of the operating collar. If some how or some reason the PTO fingers were engaged, the tractor would not be able to be rolled together. The front lip of the operating collar is a smaller diameter than the rear lip.

My written communication skills are poor, but check out the 2510 syncro PTO clutch operation.

HTR, After thinking about it some more I did go and get a service manual to study my leson some more and guess what, you are right. The 2510 as you discribed is the excection to the rule and works like you said. I looked in the 2520 book as well and it is like all the rest of the larger models maybe that how I got it stuck in my head. The 2510 does have a large steped lip on the bearing as you said and is the trick to make the over center finger do its thing. I did rember that the 2510 PTO finger did not have the finger hight adjustable but guess I missed on the rest of it. Please except my apolisies and Thank you for correcting me. Even the old dogs need to be corrected time to time. Thanks Dave W.

you should revisit this info, since in the case of the 3020 pto clutch, the throwout bearing supplies the pressure to the discs

The 3020 diesel I had apart used the throw out
bearing to release the disc on both clutches.
A powershift may be different.

the clutch bearing releases the main clutch, the pto bearing engages the pto
