Broken Steering Piston on John Deere 4500 4x4

The steering piston on my three year old 4500 broke after 100 total hours during a tight turning maneuver. Did not hit anything. Is this normal?

John Deere refused warranty, since over two years old. However I see they redesigned the front steering in last few years to eliminate this problem. Dealer also said he has had 10% failures on my design.

Seems like they should be covering this as defective design.

Did Deere refuse or just your dealer? Make sure you talk to the area service rep. in person and call Deere and complain if you can get a phone number. I have worked for various tractor and car dealers before and know how they treat you after the sale . They don't give a darn! But usually the higher ups at a company will do something. Keep posting and maybe someone who still works at Deere will help you or at the very least give you a phone number to call. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Just recieved a new 4600 and hope ot is the new design. I assume you are talking about the power steering cylinder behind the axle? My father had one break on a JD garden tractor years ago and I remember it as being very flimsey.

You are correct that the part that broke is the steering rod that comes out of the cylinder located behind the front axle. I looked at the new 4500/4600 at the dealer and it has the a new design with a beefier steering case and rod.

Appears to have been bad design on my three year old tractor. They have appeared to fix problem but not willing to warranty failures of the bad design.
