I have a JD A, 1951, and changed oil couple weeks ago. also drained first reduction, and flushed it and crankcase.Put some oil in 1st reduction(about 1 qt) and put the rest of three gallons in crankcase. Did I put to much it reduction? Now I see a little leakage on belt pully, after a day of good discing. Is there a seal that I need to replace? If so I will have to remove all of clutch parts, to get to crank seal, if that is the problem. Or could I have put to much oil in reduction, (Hopefully a quick fix).

Jack

Jack, it's pretty hard to overfill the 1st reduction cover on an "A" as the excess oil just drains back into the crankcase.
~A little oil leakage at the clutch pulley on an older 2 cylinder tractor is pretty much normal as there isn't a seal in there. ~Where is it leaking at? Behind the pulley or around the cover?
~Things that make it leak worse are running on a side hill with the pulley on the down side, using new super slick oil, worn R/H main bearing, engine blow-by, leaving the tractor running with the clutch dis-engaged, plugged oil drain holes in the pulley, too much crank end play & probably things I forgot to mention.....

Clooney and Jack, one thing to look at is a plugged oil return hole in the bottom of the crankcase that lets the oil drain back into the sump. This is a pretty common problem on an A that hasn't been used hard for a long time. Take off the crankcase cover and see if there is some crud in the bottom of the crankcase. I would imagine there will be. It needs to come out. Mike

Thanks for the replies, will check all that you mentioned, engine has a little blowby, and there was some crud in the first reduction drain hole, might not have got it all out.The leakage is on the back side not at the cover, used pretty hard for two days and was very little, just enough to know it is there. Again thanks for the come backs

Jack

Jack, it doesn't take much blow-by to cause the clutch area to spit some oil.
~Usually if the drain hole between the first reduction cover & sump is plugged it will cause a big oil leak with oil spinning out of the back of the clutch pulley in great amounts. ~You can check the drain back hole by draining the engine oil, then leaving the drain plug out [don't drain the 1st reduction cover], then add oil to the 1st reduction cover, it should drain out of the engine drain plug hole about as soon as you pour it in & in the same amount as added.
