I just purchased a horse drawn planter. I believe it is a 999 two row corn planter. Where do I find the serial # and what it means as far as the model and year?
The planter is in good shape. Original paint, some lite rust. The tongue is red, wheels and seat yellow everything else is green. What is the approximate value? I paid $50 did I get took??

Thanks for the help.

I took a nice original one to the Columbia City
auction last fall,it only brought $70.00. It
had the tongue also.

Unfortunately, 999 corn planters did not have serial numbers, as the practice of serial numbering most machines other than tractors, combines, etc not occur until the late 1940's. There were some changes to the 999 over the years, so if you could post some of the part and casting numbers on the planter, perhaps the year could be narrowed down.

The paint scheme sounds absolutely right, and for 50 bucks, you got a steal!!!

Some of the things to check are the check heads to see if it is 2 roller or 4. Look at the braces going to the front edge of runners. Are they 2 pieces of flat steel on edge or 1 cast bracket. What type marker system; 1 wooden pole behind seat or metal markers on each side? Of course the part #'s of these pieces would help narrow up date and model.

I don't know of any serial number on the 999, but I may be wrong. The 290 has a serial number and you can date that one. $50.00, if all there. I would have bought.
