Get rid of the 12 volt delco starter. They were never satisfactory on the late 4020, 4320, or 4520. Get a Nippondenso or Iskra. I think the Iskra is the best choice, a little more cranking power than the Nippondenso, and will fit under the intake manifold, if yours has the drop manifold.

In addition to other posts, 2 other things which can cause hard starting; mis-timed injection pump and mal-adjusted valves.

4020's are my specialty.
first thing...do you have the 12volt or 24volt starter. do you have those 2 slim forklift batteries. do you have large gauge cables going to the starter and from the battery. try checking your de-stroke valve. get a pressure gauge when the machine is running and hook it up to your remotes. you should have 2250 psi a little more is ok. you should have about 22-24 gpm. also tyr load testing both batteries individually. on a two battery system a weak battery will kill off the other good battery.
any questions...dont hessitate to e-mail me

The main hyd pump is not going out of stroke when the tractor is cranking. This may be caused by a high pressure leak in the system or problems in the main hyd pump. Block off the line to the priority valve with a cap. Then crank over the tractor and see if it cranks better. If not then the problem is in the main hyd pump. The main hyd pump can be fitted with an electric destroke valve to shut off the pump when cranking. Check with your JD dealer for an AR40463 destroke kit. As mentioned before-be sure to check for good battery connections, good ground and good starter connections to be sure it is not an electrical voltage drop problem.

One suggestion is to look at the battery cable ends. If they are "after-market" ends that clamp on the end of a cable, they will corrode and not allow enough current to the starter. You can sometimes salvage an end by removing the cable end from the battery and soaking the bolts holding it to the cable with PB Blaster and tapping on them, but don't be surprised if you wring the bolts off.

I thought all old JD's from 1960-1994 had "shake the steering wheel" in the directions. Both of my 4020's ( '64 and '72), 4630's (3 of 'em), and my 9930 cotton pickers all need a shake of the wheel to start. Even with good batteries, clean cables, etc... When I bought one of the pickers it was 2 years old and the fairly new salesman got in it and could not start it but my farmhand got in it, shook the wheel and she fired right up. I told him he did not have the "magic touch" yet.

Yeah.. I have a 4000 like 4020, just be sure the 3 PT is put down, and yes you have to turn the steering wheel, other thing you should check be sure you have good battery post and starter checked for repairs, battery wires in good order clean, it should hlep start up, let me know if any other problem.. Other thing is your tractor Gas or Diesel? mine is Diesel
