Can anyone give me the procedure on setting the gear in my governor to the fan shaft. Dumb question, what does heel mean.
Thanks Steven

Steven, I will add to the other good comments and say that after you have the backlash and heel set roll the gears over several times and be sure there is no roughness or binding. I have seen gears be ok in one spot and be just a little tight in others. Just watch your fingers because those helical cut gears have no sympathy for them! It is not a hard job, just takes a little patience. And I have even used mismatched gears in extreme circumstances and never had any problems. Just takes some time to get it "right". Hope this helps. Mike

Steven, both Mark & JohnT pretty well have the adjustment procedure correct.
~I deviate from that procedure a little on used gears that have pronounced wear on them. Once gears are worn in to a pattern I don't like to move the contact pattern very far for fear of gear noise or gear destruction. ~If I know the gears were relatively quiet before teardown I usually try to keep the same wear pattern & adjustment that they were running at & just decrease the backlash a little. I usually use yellow or red lead to view the contact pattern if the original gaskets & shims were lost.
~I have seen moderate gear wear turn into gear destruction if the backlash is set too low or the gear wear position is moved too far. ~The bottom line is make sure the gear teeth aren't worn sharp on the ends of the teeth & don't set the backlash to tight on a used set of gears.

the heel is where the back of both gears matchup. I usually take the gov. housing off the tractor and turn it upside down so that I can see the inside with the gov shaft installed, then attach the fan shaft and check the heel adjustment. add or remove shims as necessary.

Steven, I am not a very good hand at reading or following instructions or manuals, but am sure you can get a manual or someone smarther then me on here to help, but I can tell you how I set mine and its been quiet and never a problem. First, as you probably know, most of the adjustemnt for proper mating and fan backlash is derived from the different thickness gaskets on the fanshaft to governor match and at the horizontal governor shaft end bearing cap. I added or removed those gaskets on each surface until the bevel gears matched up at each end (both gears even, and one did not go out past the other) and then set the backlash until the fan would turn maybe 1/2 inch or so total (1/4 each way). Hopefully, someone can tell us the right way to do it now. If you get her wrong, you can get that awful noisy whine, which mine had before but no longer. I guess you know those gears come in a matched set and are very expensive and if replacing one, you're betetr off to replace and get them both (to avoid whine and mis match) from a used tractor Good luck Ol John T
