Just purchased an older shaver post driver. The dealer said that the return hydrolic needs to go directly to the hydrolic "sump", not through a valved connection because the flow rate is to high. Anyone have experience with connecting anything in this way? Any help would be appreciated.

BW is on the right track. Also, check to see that the valve on the driver is set up for a closed center hyd system.

I think the large plug near the serial # plate on the back can be used for the return.

I put an elbow and about 6 inches of pipe on the end of the return line, took the cap off the fill port and stuck the pipe down it. On a 3020 the fill port should be under the seat I think. You may need to wire or tape it in place because the post driver will dump the fluid with a lot of froce.

You can buy a ported oil filter cap from John Deere or add a port to the one you have. The return oil is forced into the filter. This way you will keep a good supply of oil to the pump at all times and any oil returned to the tank has been filtered. It could be an important consideration in case the cylinder is damaged.

We did the same with our 3020 with a post driver. Screw the fill cap off, plumb return line into it. A bell bushing and 90 degree elbow connected to the return line from post driver should get you to driving post. Watch your Hand while driving post, DANGEROUS.
