We are having some problems with our fuel guage on our early 4020 diesel. I bought a new guage and sending unit some time ago and could never get it to work properly, so today with the covers off we decided to mess with it again. Looking at the back of the guage I get the best response when the ground is on the right post, the hot wire on the left post and the sending unit on the center post, this is looking at the back of the guage. With any other combination the guage buries itself to either full or empty. The tractor has half a tank of fuel. Any suggestions? Do I have a bad sening unit? When I ground it out it moves the gauge to empty.

thanks

ryan

ryan, I will share what I know for sure on the fuel gauge scenario as I have been involved in a lot of parts changes that Deere has made with this part and application over the last 24 years. There is allot of factors to take in when repairing the fuel gauge on this application as part changes have been made. Factor (1), Fuel gauges for old 3010's, 20's, 4010's and 20's Gas and Diesel were the same gauge / part originally. Factor (2) The original gauge was used in a 12 volt positive ground circuit Gas and Diesel. Factor (3) Many of these old Gas 12 volt and (Diesel) 24 volt system tractors were converted to a 12 volt negative ground system. Factor (4) The old original gauge will work in a converted system. Factor (5) The new replacement gauge will only work in a 12 volt positive ground system. Factor (6) If you go to John Deere to get an original replacement gauge for the older tractors mentioned and your tractor has been converted to a 12 volt negative ground it will NOT work. See factor (3), (4) and (5). So to sum all the factors up, if your tractor has been converted to a 12 volt negative ground system go back to John Deere and get a negative ground gauge and sender to match it. The gauge and sender used on the later (factor 12 negative ground system is what it will take to make it work. You will have to keep the gauge matched with the sender because the later gauge works off a different ohms range. If converting an old tractor with a good working fuel gauge it is fine to leave it as it will work fine as long as it is the old original two wire fuel gauge. If the fuel gauge had been replaced before converting, there is a good chance you will have to be replace it again with one with the correct polarity. Hope you can follow this as I just recently went threw this on a tractor. There is no way to alter the wiring to make the new gauge for the original application work if the tractor polarity has been changed go town and get another. Good Luck, Dave W.

Ryan, I can't give you any part numbers or anything on this - but I've fought this problem in the past. There are two gauges available - one is positive ground and one is negative ground. I can't remember the whole situation, but I ended up going to an old boy who works on Deeres independently who worked at a dealer when the New Generations first came out. He is pretty much the most knowledgeable Deere guy I've ever known, and he got me straightened out. It seems like I was trying to use a negative ground gauge in a positive ground system, and that was the whole problem. Like I said, I can't remember specifics, but he gave me a different part number gauge to order and it worked great. Just my two cents.
