I am ready to install the head gasket on mi JD 60 but reading in the manual it calls for the smooth side toward the block. Niether side of the gasket is smoother than the other, which side do I use towards the block?

Also it calls for the gasket to be soaked in oil for 5 seconds. What is the purpose of this?

It also calls for shalac to be used on the surfaces, What kind of shalac and where do you get it?

I just did mine and the gasket that came off had the stamped lettering facing the crankcase. I suspect that the oil helps the gasket move as you torque the head and it compresses. I don't know of any other shellac other than regular wood finishing shellac and that is what I used. I assume it gives gaskets better adhesion and sealing. If I am wrong somebody is sure to jump in and comment. Anyway that's what I did!!

On my 60 I placed the gasket with the bore rings facing the head, the other side won't have the ring outline and put it toward the block, I use the K-W copper spray on all my metal gaskets and it has worked well, 2to3 coats per side and let it dry about a minute between coats, don't spray it on real thick , just light coats and install soon after the last coat, I think my 60 will be done soon and I'll post the pics.
