I have a 41 handstart John Deere B that I just love. It was starting/running great last fall, but the upper water pipe rusted out. So last fall I removed the governor housing bolts and raised the governor housing enough the get the water pipe flange off the water pipe studs. I had the pipe repaired at a local exhaust shop this spring, and again lifted the governor housing enough to get the flange back over the studs, and put it all back together. When I tried to start it tonight with the petcocks open, it fires... but it is backfiring out the right cylinder petcock (not the exhaust). It is so loud it scared the neighbor kids. I am wondering if I have the tractor out of time now? I am kinda handy, but by no means a mechanic. Could someone please help me figure this out?

You may have not gotten the governors drive gear back in time when you raised her. Like clooney said, the mag should snap over to fire the left cylinder when the LH Impulse mark on the flywheel is at 3 O Clock by the mark. If you got the governor gear back in the right place, the female drive cog slot behind the mag that turns it should be perfectly level horizontal at that time, and if not, the governor needs to be raised and the gear turned until thats so. Good Luck Ol John T

John, slowly turn the flywheel in the starting direction & see if the mag snaps when the [LH impulse] mark on the flywheel lines up with the case mark (the case mark is at the same height as the center of the crankshaft & at 3 o'clock directly behind the flywheel). If it snaps close to where the marks line up, your ignition timing is good & you have other problems. If it doesn't snap close to [LH impulse] to the [case mark] lining up, post back for directions on how to check the mag drive flange position vs. flywheel LH impulse mark.....
