Hello, Just bought a '38B. Very very new to this.. Was getting water in the block via the pushrod guides.(there was fresh water sitting in the pushrod guide valley in the block. The head still had steel guides, and one was leaking and coroded for sure maybe two.
Had the head rebuilt, valve guides, brass pushrod guides two exhaust valves, resurface the head and pressure test.I ran the engine a few times and noticed water/oil mix dripping down from the return valley between the cylinders on the crank side. Pulled the valve cover off, water was dripping down from the pushrods. What now? What should I check when I pull it apart again.
Thanks Steve

I called the machine shop that did the work. The guy said the mechanic used red Loc tite instead of the stuff Clooney recommended.(Loctite RC 620)
They are going to redo it no charge and pressure test it before and after.
Steven
Clooney thanks again for the help

Steven , check for the tubes being sealed to the head at both ends & also check that exhaust manifold bolts aren't too long & extending into the head far enough to poked a hole in the tube(s)
~The other possibility is that someone drilled too deep while drilling a broken exhaust manifold stud out or ran a tap in too far. ~Before pulling the head, you might want to pull the pushrods out & shine a light in the tubes to see if you can identify which tube & where in the tube the water is flowing from.....

It looks like the water is coming from the pushrod guides right at the edge of the head.I can see corosion around the guides and on the gasket.I noticed the hole in the gasket is about 3/4" of an inch around. To seal up past the brass part of the guide it would need to be like 5/8". Do they make a gasket with smaller holes.Should these holes be smaller. You had mentioned sealing up the area where the guide meets the block.WHat do you seal it with.
Thanks Steven

Steven, by push rod guides do you mean push rod tubes? Those tubes run through the water jacket in the head & are used to keep the coolant out of the engine & not as a push rod guide.
~I don't fully understand where the water is leaking at. What side of the head is the leak at & is the leak at the seam of the tube to the head casting, or other place.
~I use LocTite RC 620 retaining compound to seal & retain the tubes in the head on both ends.

Yes, I mean the push rod tubes. And I'm convinced it is leaking where the seam of the tube and the head casting meet on the gasket side of the head. How can I tell if the machine shop that did the work, used a sealer like you talked about. Is it a MUST to use the sealer, will it leak for sure without. I will call the machine shop tomorrow, and find out.So the head gasket isn't doing any sealing for the brass tube.

Steven, if sealer was used you "might" be able to see the remnants of the sealer at the seam. Why not just ask them though.
~I don't know if sealer is a must, I have always used it because I have a homemade tube expander & using sealer on the tube ends is a good insurance policy. In the early days I used shellac, then switched to Permetex, now I use LocTite retaining compound. ~I can't stand leaks, so use a sealer on almost everything I install, including ALL bolts that enter an open ended hole with fluid on the other side, any pins or tubes that enter a hole with fluid on the other side & any gaskets or seal edges that retain fluid....

Do I need to do anything special to the head gasket, other than soak it in oil for 30 seconds,
before I install it.
