Charles, Your problem is very common on early Dubuque utility tractors. The PTO clutch and PTO brake are both hydraulic actuated. Each function has a pencil size steel hydraulic line supplying oil to there function accordingly. What happens is: vibration, fatigue and time will cause lines to crack and or break resulting in a leak and lose of oil pressure / supply to the rest of the tractor hydraulic functions. In your case the line supplying pressure oil to the brake has failed and by turning on the PTO ON the leak / brake is shut off and hydraulic supply is then regained. To repair replace the failed line and take a good look at its mate the clutch line while there. It will require splitting the tractor between the clutch housing and transmission to do so. If you want instruction on how to just post back and I will give you some pointers. Good Luck Dave W.

Charles:

You are into a technical area that will require special equipment for testing and R & R. Respectfully, I have two suggestions.

1.) See JD TM-1051, Section 70, Group 5, pp. 3-7.

Buy, beg, barrow or steal this manual, if you don't already have one. If you can't obtain TM-1051 then suggestion 2, below, is your ONLY other recourse.

2.) See Yellow Pages, Tractor Repair, John Deere Service Center.

BTDT. Good luck

Ayup Ive heard of it. Usually a sign that the pto brake is shot and bypassing oil. Could also be one of the tubes that connects to the pto clutch/brake has come loose. pretty much requires a tractor split to fix. Anyone else want to add or advise?
